Discover Osoppo from different perspectives: explore historical traces at Osoppo Fort, follow a specific circular route on the Anello del Colle di Osoppo, and experience diverse habitats at the Sorgive di Bars.

Fortress and historical traces

Osoppo Fort was declared a national monument in 1923. At the fort, visitors can see remains from the First World War and earlier centuries. These traces connect military history from different eras.

The Fortezza di Osoppo can be visited via three routes: Castel Novo, Forte sotterraneo and Colle Napoleone. If you plan to visit, confirm the local arrangements in advance.

Another historical episode concerns Friulians from the surrounding area: at Osoppo Fort, they drove out the imperial garrisons stationed there and resisted their counteroffensive for almost seven months, until October.

Church and botanical garden

On Colle di Osoppo, the Chiesa di San Pietro stands near the fort, on the site of an earlier Early Christian basilica. This history gives the church its own historical significance alongside the fort’s military traces.

The Orto Botanico Osoppo is home to more than 300 botanical species. The garden also includes an open-air museum with old farming tools, complementing its plant life with evidence of earlier agricultural work.

Hiking between the circular trail and the wetland

The Anello del Colle di Osoppo is an easy 5.1-kilometre circular trail that takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes. It passes through Parco del Rivellino, follows Sentiero CAI 720, and offers views of the Tagliamento and the Prealpi Carniche. The duration is approximate; trail conditions can change. Check conditions before your hike.

Sentiero CAI 720 starts on a paved road below the slopes of Forte di Osoppo and outside the bastions of Rivellino. The starting point is at an elevation of 180 metres.

The Sorgive di Bars offer a different natural setting: an easy circular trail lets you explore a wide variety of natural habitats. The Sorgiva di Bars is a wetland with marshy meadows and hygrophilous forests interspersed with steppe-like Magredi landscapes. The Anello highlights views of the river and mountains, while the Sorgive showcase diverse habitats.

Orchids and events

The Festa delle Orchidee takes place in the streets of Osoppo’s historic centre and in natural areas where many orchid species grow in the wild. Every year, guided excursions are held during the main flowering season. Typical dishes and food and wine offerings were planned for the 2026 edition. If you want to time your trip to coincide with the event, check the dates and programme for the relevant edition.
