Palmanova combines a nine-pointed star-shaped layout with a fortress complex made up of three concentric rings. This means your stay can focus both on the city’s structure and history and on activities along the fortifications and multimedia perspectives on the fortress. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you want to devote your time mainly to architecture and urban history, the Anello delle Fortificazioni or the digital offerings.

The fortress city and its history

The three rings were built in three phases: 1593–1620, 1665–1683 and 1806–1809. The time span also makes the complex readable as a historical development: alongside its striking star-shaped layout, the fortifications can be understood as the result of several construction phases. The star shape and concentric rings describe different features: one refers to the layout of the fortress city, the other to the tiered arrangement of its defensive system.

Piazza Grande adds its own geometric focal point: it is Palmanova’s hexagonal central square. Formerly known as Piazza d’Armi, it was the garrison’s parade ground. The square adds a different geometry to the star-shaped layout and also points to the site’s former military use.

The Museum of the First World War and the Fortress of Palmanova preserves documents, weapons, uniforms and memorabilia. The collection covers the city’s history from its founding in 1593 to the present day. Its time span therefore extends beyond the three construction phases of the fortress rings and gives the city’s history its own thematic focus.

Routes and multimedia experiences

The Anello delle Fortificazioni is suitable for hiking, cycling, mountain biking, horseback riding and Nordic walking. The route runs along the fortifications. The options range from activities on foot to cycling, mountain biking and horseback riding. If you want to experience the fortress complex not only as a historic urban space but also through an activity, the Anello is a good focus for your plans.

The FVG7 Friuli Cycleway (C700) ends in Piazza Grande. This distinguishes it from the Anello, which has a clearly defined endpoint; the Anello, by contrast, focuses on activities along the fortifications. If you want to include cycling in your stay, this distinction helps you tell the two routes apart: the FVG7 leads to the central square, while the Anello is associated with several activities along the fortress complex.

The multimedia experience Ascensore Virtuale offers an aerial view of the star-shaped city, extending all the way into space. In the Sala Video Multimediale, visitors can see a 3D video mapping of the fortress and virtual narrators. Both offerings take a different approach from the physical structure itself: one provides a perspective from the city all the way into space, while the other tells the story of the fortress in an audiovisual presentation.

The Gallerie di Contromina are open on weekends, during special openings or by prior reservation for groups. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
