When searching for hotels in Ronchis, the area’s local themes help you get a sense of the destination: landscape, history and religious art sit alongside cycling tourism. Fraforeano is home to a park and a garden with distinctive plants; water engineering and historic sites offer further cultural and historical connections. You can choose the focus of your stay according to whether you are more interested in nature, history, art or a cycling trip.

Fraforeano Park and Garden

Fraforeano Park covers about three hectares and stretches southwest of the villa along the embankment of the Tagliamento. Its approximate size and location on the embankment give it a clear connection to the landscape. Fraforeano Garden offers a different focus: its old exotic plants include Carolina poplars, cedars of Lebanon and sequoias; it also has a bamboo grove. The park can be understood in terms of its size and location, while the garden’s character is shaped by its specifically named tree species and bamboo. Those interested in the landscape can thus enjoy two distinct perspectives on Fraforeano.

Water engineering and medieval history

The Roggia Barbariga offers another perspective on the town’s history. It was built in 1625 to carry water to the mill in Fraforeano, which dates from 1275. The two dates refer to different structures: 1275 is the date of the mill, while 1625 is the date the Roggia was built. This makes their chronological sequence clear. For visitors interested in historic engineering, this connection is a distinct focus, separate from the park and garden.

The San Bartolomeo di Volta hospice adds the medieval movement of travellers to this history. It was founded towards the end of the 13th century and served as a refuge for pilgrims. They travelled to Latisana, from where they would embark for Istria, Dalmatia, Venice or the Holy Land. The Roggia’s story centres on supplying water to a mill; the hospice’s role was to support travellers. Both topics illustrate different functions and connections in the area’s history.

Religious art and literature

Ronchis’s religious art also spans several periods. At least twenty murals and frescoes from the 18th to the 20th century have been preserved or documented along the main roads. The ancient wayside shrine near the Spinedo pumping station in Ronchis provides a specific local connection. Dedicated to Santa Sabata, it contains 17th-century frescoes. These frescoes date from an earlier period than the murals and frescoes mentioned along the main roads. The religious artworks can therefore be distinguished both by location and by century.

Fraforeano di Ronchis is also associated with visits by Ernest Hemingway and features in his novel “Across the River and Into the Trees” (“Di là dal fiume e tra gli alberi”). This gives the town a literary connection alongside its architectural and religious themes. Ronchis and the neighbouring hamlet of Fraforeano are also considered a stop on a cycling tourism route. This cycling connection adds to the themes of landscape, history, art and literature.
