Socchieve brings together church art and hiking trails that reveal different sides of the town. The Pieve di Castoia stands on a hill between Nonta and Socchieve, overlooking the middle course of the Tagliamento. San Martino is home to a fresco cycle dating from 1493; other destinations along the way include the Stavoli and Casera Chiarzo. This gives you options when choosing what to focus on during your stay: churches and art, a loop trail or a climb with a specified elevation gain. Trekking is part of the holiday experience in Socchieve, a quiet place surrounded by nature.

Churches and Cultural Heritage

The Pieve di Castoia is dedicated to Santa Maria Annunziata and is considered a symbol of Christianity in the valley. Its location on the hill between Nonta and Socchieve affords views over the middle course of the Tagliamento. There is a car park at the foot of the ascent to the Pieve; check local parking arrangements before your visit.

San Martino is a national monument. The church features an important fresco cycle by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo dating from 1493. A named hiking route also leads to this building: the Alta Valle del Tagliamento route passes through San Martino. If you would like to combine art history with a hike, this is a specific church stop along the route.

The 15th-century Church of San Giovanni Battista stands in Viaso. Its features include a Gothic window and a polygonal presbytery. A polygonal presbytery is a multi-sided choir; together with the window, it gives the church a distinctive architectural profile.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

The route From the Pieve di Castoia to the Stavoli is a walking trail where you can experience Socchieve’s history and nature. It crosses the Lumiei at a concreted ford. After crossing, the route follows the signs for the Cammino delle Pievi and CAI Trail No. 239. The route description thus combines a cultural and historical highlight with a specific river crossing and named trail markers.

The Monte Nolia Loop, by contrast, is a circular route. It starts in Feltrone and circles Monte Nolia via the Stavoli della Congregazione. It first passes through mixed woodland above Feltrone, then reaches Provincial Road 35 in the Conca di Pani area. From Socchieve’s smallest hamlet, the loop offers views across the Val Tagliamento as far as Tolmezzo and Monte Amariana. An inscription carved in stone also links the route to a peace agreement between Voltois and Feltrone over a boundary dispute. This loop brings together the landscape and a specific story shared by two places.

For a climb with a specified distance and elevation gain, consider the Climb to Casera Chiarzo: it is about two kilometres long, gains around 380 metres in elevation and takes approximately one and a half hours. The route is part of the CAI trail network and is well signposted as Trail No. 235 along its entire length. Casera Chiarzo has a stone fireplace, a table and two benches in its main room; outside, there is a large table made from tree trunks. The approximate duration and elevation gain offer practical guidance for planning your time.

Summer Crafts

Another cultural highlight is the Carnic Exhibition: Art, Culture, Work. The exhibition and market are dedicated to traditional mountain crafts as well as work made using newer techniques. The event takes place in summer, between July and August, and has been running for more than 30 years. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the specific event dates in advance.
