Arquata Del Tronto: History and Nature
Accommodation in Arquata Del Tronto
Arquata del Tronto is the only municipality in Europe whose territory lies within two national parks: the Monti Sibillini and the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. History, nature and regional traditions give the destination a range of different facets. When planning your visit, you can focus on what interests you most, whether it is the landscape, historic buildings, art or local specialities.
Landscape and historic routes
The town centre sits on a hill, dominated by the imposing 13th-century Rocca, which overlooks the valley. The fortress includes a tower dating from the 11th or 12th century. This landmark therefore brings together different periods of construction: the tower is among its oldest parts, while the later fortifications define the appearance of the complex.
The Via Salaria also gives the area a sense of historical depth. It has run through the territory of Arquata since Roman times and was an important transport and trade route. In Trisungo, a milestone dating from the 1st century BC has been preserved; it is associated with this ancient road.
Churches, art and crafts
Several places preserve different traces of religious and artistic history. An excerpt from the Shroud of Turin is kept in the Church of San Francesco in Borgo di Arquata. In Capodacqua stands the 16th-century octagonal temple dedicated to the Madonna del Sole; the frescoes inside are attributed to Cola d’Amatrice. A Turkish flag is kept in the Church of Sant’Agata in Spelonga.
Museums and traditional skills are also among the area’s cultural highlights. Villa Papi is a house museum with a large park, where the artist’s creations blend with nature. The Diego Pierpaoli Museum is located in the historic centre of Arquata. It is devoted to modern art and associated with Immanentism, the artistic movement founded by Professor Diego Pierpaoli. In Colle, the traditional production of charcoal has been preserved as an ancient craft. If you are planning to visit individual cultural sites, it is advisable to check current visiting arrangements in advance.
Regional cuisine and local history
The local food culture has its own character, expressed through traditional specialities. Fagioli fritti in brodo is a traditional dish from Pretare. The handmade pasta specialities Zochene and Frascatigli come from Spelonga.
Pretare is also home to the remains of a lime kiln, where limestone was processed to produce quicklime. Together with the milestone in Trisungo, the churches and the art sites, this example shows the variety of historical traces in the area: they range from ancient routes and craft production to sacred art and modern painting.
Hiking and an annual festival
One specific hiking option is the route from Forca di Presta: it takes 2.5 to 3 hours, follows the upper edge of the centuries-old Macchia Cavaliera beech forest and then reaches the Rifugio CittĂ di Ascoli mountain refuge at Colle Cese. Check mountain conditions before setting out.
Another regular event in the annual calendar is the patron saint festival in honour of the Santissimo Salvatore. It takes place every year on the first Sunday in September. Alongside historic and scenic attractions, this gives you a recurring festival date and the hike from Forca di Presta as different options to consider when planning your visit.
