Offida brings together architectural and art history with a distinctive theme: bobbin lace. It also offers archaeological collections, religious sites and culinary traditions. If you’re looking for a hotel in Offida, these different highlights can help guide your trip planning, depending on whether you’re particularly interested in theater, crafts, history or regional specialties.

Theater, Walls and Architectural History

The Teatro Serpente Aureo is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “The system of Italian theatres with boxes in central Italy between the 18th and 19th centuries.” It continues to host theater seasons, concerts and Offida’s traditional carnival. If you’d like to include an event in your trip, check the dates for your planned stay, as the program may change.

Santa Maria della Rocca also brings together several periods in the town’s history: the church was built in 1330 on the foundations of a Lombard castle. Frescoes from the 14th century have been preserved in its crypt, many of them attributed to the Maestro di Offida. The Mura castellane date from the 12th and 13th centuries; they once enclosed the entire village. Together, these buildings offer different insights into Offida’s medieval history.

Bobbin Lace, Art and Archaeology

Opened in 1998, the Museo del merletto a tombolo is divided into seven rooms covering lace-making techniques and uses. Among its notable pieces is a dress worn by Naomi Campbell in London in 1997: designed by Antonio Berardi, it was made by lace-makers from Offida. Bobbin lace is also featured in the public artwork Monumento alle Merlettaie. Created by Aldo Sergiacomi in 1983, it depicts three women working on lace.

The Polo Museale is housed in an 18th-century aristocratic palace that once belonged to the Castellotti family, later known as De Castellotti. It includes the Museo delle Tradizioni Popolari, the Pinacoteca Civica, the Museo del Merletto a Tombolo and the Museo Archeologico G. Allevi. The archaeological museum’s five rooms each focus on a different theme: the first covers the life and research of Guglielmo Allevi, while the second displays finds from the Middle Paleolithic, Late Neolithic and Bronze Age. The third and fourth rooms show Picene culture through bronzes, weapons, jewelry and ceramics; the fifth is devoted to Roman and Lombard relics. The collection thus spans early finds and later cultures.

Another way to explore local art is the Museo Aldo Sergiacomi. Located in the sculptor’s former workshops, it preserves many of his works and drawings. Sergiacomi was from Offida, so the museum complements the public presentation of his work with insights into his artistic practice.

Religious Sites and Rural Architecture

The Santuario Diocesano del Miracolo Eucaristico, including the chapel in the former Augustinian monastery, was built between 1338 and 1441. A niche at the end of the apse holds the remains of a Eucharistic miracle said to have occurred in 1273 in Lanciano, in Abruzzo. An iron grille and two 15th-century walnut doors protect the niche. The different dates distinguish the event to which the tradition refers from the sanctuary’s later construction.

The Chiesa di San Lazzaro offers a different architectural perspective. Set in a striking rural landscape, it embodies traditional rural architecture. If you’re interested in religious buildings, you can explore both a sanctuary with a well-documented history and an example of rural architecture as distinct themes.

Regional Specialties and Events

Offida’s sweets include “funghetti,” made with anise. The Sagra del Chichiripieno offers another culinary experience: organized by the Pro Loco di Offida, the event is a chance to try the famous stuffed pizza and other food specialties. If you’re planning your trip around the Sagra, check the dates and program for your travel period. This lets you distinguish the city’s enduring cultural highlights from a specific event.
