Pedaso: Coast, Culture and Landscape
Accommodation in Pedaso
Pedaso brings together a coastline, geological features and architectural history. Its varied highlights offer practical points of reference for planning your trip.
Coast and Activities
Pedaso’s beach has a pebbly shore, with natural rocks along the water’s edge. The clear coastal waters, rich in marine flora and fauna, are particularly well suited to diving and underwater fishing. Sea conditions and opportunities for these activities can vary by season, so check conditions for the time of your trip.
If you’d like to explore the coast on foot, the beach is home to the approximately two-kilometre-long walk along the Lungomare dei cantautori del XX secolo. The route is accessible via underpasses dedicated to contemporary singer-songwriters. This stretch of coast offers different ways to enjoy it: a walk along the beach or activities in the water.
For a cycling trip, there’s another route to follow: a cycle path starts at the mouth of the River Aso, on the border with Campofilone, and continues south. If you’re cycling south, check local route conditions before setting off.
Architectural History and Art
The Pedaso lighthouse was built in 1877. Mined by the retreating Austrian pioneers of the German army, it was rebuilt immediately after the war. Its history thus links the year it was built to a wartime event and the subsequent reconstruction.
The Neo-Gothic church of Santa Maria e San Pietro Apostolo was built between 1897 and 1929. Its sacristy houses a Holy Family with the infant John, dating from 1750 and attributed to Filippo Ricci. The artwork is therefore much older than the church whose sacristy it is in.
The Chiesolina is dedicated to the Madonna Addolorata and was Pedaso’s only parish church until the beginning of the 20th century. Another aspect of the town’s history can be seen in the historic centre: the former seat of the municipal administration is located there, with its tower and clock marking the building. Together, these sites reflect the town’s religious history and its former municipal administration.
Landscape, Science and Culture
La Cupa is a remarkable fissure in the mountain and a testament to the landslides that have occurred over the centuries. This geological feature differs from the architectural and artistic history of the churches and historic centre.
Parco della Villa Bruti Liberati is also part of Pedaso’s landscape. A rare group of centuries-old oaks forms a green space of exceptional scenic beauty in the town centre and coastal area. Thanks to these oaks, the park is recognised as a landscape of considerable public interest.
An astronomical observatory open to visitors is located on the plateau of Monte Serrone. It has a powerful computer-controlled telescope, powered by a photovoltaic system. If you’re planning a visit, check the available visiting options in advance.
Another cultural stop is the BIMP – Biblioteca Interattiva Multimediale in Pedaso. Inaugurated in July 2014, it is a contemporary cultural space for a range of uses.
An August Event
The Sagra delle Cozze takes place in Pedaso every year from 12 to 15 August. If your trip falls during this period, check the detailed programme for your travel year.
