Porchia is a historic village on a narrow ridge. Narrow lanes and preserved remains of the fortification walls define the place. If you are interested in village history, church art, and activities in the countryside, you will find a range of topics here: from the Torrione to works in the Church of Santa Lucia, as well as hiking and e-bike experiences.

Fortifications and Early History

The Torrione dates from the 14th century and was renovated in the 15th century. As a command tower, it coordinated the village’s defense from above. Its military function can therefore be considered in connection with the preserved remains of the fortification walls. The archaeological context also includes evidence of Picenian and Roman necropolises in the Porchia area. This means the historical subject extends beyond the history of medieval fortifications.

Churches and Works of Art

The Church of Santa Lucia was commissioned by the sister of Pope Sixtus V because the family had a particular devotion to this saint. The church contains an altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child, a work by the painter Vincenzo Pagani. The Nativity in the crypt is a separate work: it is dated to 1515 and is by Giacomo Bonfini. Together, these works represent two distinct subjects and locations within the church.

The building history of the Church of Madonna della Pace is its main focus. Based on its typological features, it is presumed to date from the 15th century. Around the 18th century, it was enlarged and remodeled. The dating remains an assumption; the later enlargement and remodeling are separate stages in its building history.

Hiking Trails and Access to Madonna della Pace

The guided Porchia circular hiking trail follows country roads lined with olive groves and cultivated fields to the Church of Madonna della Pace. The church can only be reached on foot via a short but fairly steep path; suitable clothing is recommended. Check the access conditions and appropriate footwear locally.

The Porchia circular hiking trail is 5 km long, has an elevation gain of 200 m, is classified as difficulty level T for tourist hikes, and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Trail conditions can change; check them before your hike. The Porchia hiking experience also includes a tasting of local products and wines. If you would like to include this, check booking requirements and availability in advance.
