San Benedetto Del Tronto
Accommodation in San Benedetto Del Tronto
San Benedetto Del Tronto combines maritime art and history with coastal landscapes, nature watching and cycling.
Art and Maritime History
At the South Pier is the Museo d’Arte sul Mare (MAM), an open-air museum along the promenade. The surfaces of the breakwater blocks lined up there display 200 sculptures. The concrete blocks of the third section also feature more than 30 murals. Outdoor sculptures and murals make the museum a distinctive destination for anyone interested in public art.
The Museo del Mare museum complex is located at the wholesale fish market on the harbor’s North Pier and at other locations around the city. The Antiquarium Truentinum displays worked flint objects and pottery fragments from the Neolithic period. At the Museo Ittico “Augusto Capriotti,” marine specimens are arranged by theme: exhibits include sponges, starfish and various species of crustaceans, as well as a tiger shark and a megalodon. Together, the collections span archaeological finds and marine life.
Other cultural venues offer different highlights. The Museo d’Arte Sacra is next to the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Marina. The Torre dei Gualtieri, known to locals as “il Torrione,” was an important command post dating from the 12th or 13th century and now hosts exhibitions and cultural initiatives. The Palazzina Azzurra is a venue for exhibitions, conferences and various cultural events.
Seafront Promenade, Gardens and Beach
The seafront promenade stretches for four kilometers along the coast, with palm trees and themed gardens among its features. Its southern section has been transformed into a natural urban park with ten themed gardens. The promenade therefore includes both a long stretch of coastline and a clearly defined garden area in the south. San Benedetto del Tronto also has wide sandy beaches framed by palm trees and oleanders.
During the summer season, the South Pier is the departure point for several boat trips along the coast. If you are planning a particular trip, check the dates for your visit. The pier is therefore a seasonal hub for excursions, alongside the open-air museum on the same South Pier.
Sentina and Cycling
The Riserva Naturale Sentina is a protected area in San Benedetto del Tronto, with great ecological and landscape importance. It is an important stopover for numerous migratory bird species and also offers the chance to observe rare and protected birds. Those interested in nature and birdwatching will find a different focus here than along the coast and at the museums.
The San Benedetto del Tronto cycle path offers another way to explore the surrounding area: the flat route is about 15 kilometers long and connects the marina with the nearby town of Cupra Marittima. Along the cycle path, there are rest areas, drinking fountains and direct access to the beaches. The approximate route length and flat terrain provide useful points of reference for planning; the rest areas, water points and beach access mentioned also provide practical places to stop along the way.
A Dish with Maritime Tradition
Local food culture also reflects the city’s connection to the sea: brodetto alla sambenedettese is a traditional maritime dish. Fishermen used to cook on board their boats the catch they had not sold. A traditional homemade version uses white wine vinegar, paprika and green tomatoes. These ingredients give the time-honored preparation a distinctive character. If you would like to get to know the city through its cuisine, brodetto is a fitting way to connect with its maritime tradition.
