Capodarco lies on the northeastern side of the Fermo hills and is described as a balcony overlooking the sea. Church art, historic buildings and cultural reuse add further dimensions to the town’s landscape.

Location and Cycling

The climb to the center of Capodarco is about 3.7 kilometers long, with an average gradient of 5.8 percent. For cyclists, these two figures offer different points of reference: the distance indicates the length of the climb, while the percentage gives its average gradient. Together, they help you factor the ascent into your route planning. The Gran Premio Capodarco has been held annually since 1964. Alongside the cycling climb, recurring events are therefore another point of reference when planning a trip to Capodarco.

Churches and Art History

The old church of Santa Maria di Capodarco dates from 1358. By contrast, the parish church of Santa Maria di Capodarco was built around 1905 in the Neoclassical style. Although they share the same name, their histories mark different stages: the older church building was converted into the Teatro Nuovo di Capodarco, while the parish church houses an affiliated parish museum.

The parish church contains a 15th-century polyptych by Vittore Crivelli. The multi-panel artwork depicts the Madonna and Child, as well as Saint Jerome, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Francis and Blessed Angelo Clareno. The figures give the work a clear sacred character. At the same time, it brings together different periods: the polyptych dates from the 15th century, while the parish church was built around 1905. The artwork and the architecture can therefore be viewed as two distinct historical layers.

Collection, Villa and Theatre

The parish museum preserves liturgical vestments, sacred objects, tabernacles and processional lanterns. The collection includes various forms of church furnishings, from textiles to items used for worship and processions. It offers a different perspective from the polyptych: rather than focusing on a single artwork, it brings together several types of sacred objects.

The Villa di Capodarco was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is the historic site where the Capodarco movement began in 1966. Like the parish church, built around 1905, the villa dates to the early 20th century; the movement’s history, by contrast, adds a later point of focus. This makes it possible to distinguish clearly between the building and its historical role.

The Teatro Nuovo di Capodarco also combines architectural history with a cultural use: the former church building was repurposed and now hosts arthouse film series. The site thus brings both its former religious use and the theatre’s cultural role into focus. If you would like to combine your trip with the Gran Premio Capodarco, check the dates for the period you plan to visit.
