Massa Fermana brings art, museums and traces of the past together in a compact cultural offering. If you choose a destination based on your cultural interests, here you can explore works in the Pinacoteca, art in a church and museums with different areas of focus. Local history is also present: the historic town centre is surrounded by old walls.

Historical Traces in the Town Centre

Porta Sant'Antonio is a national monument and consists of the remains of a medieval castle dating to the 13th century. The Roman funerary inscriptions, whose remains in Massa Fermana are considered traces of its ancient past, point to a different historical period. This allows you to distinguish different periods in the townscape without combining them into a single story.

The Pinacoteca and Church Art

The Pinacoteca Comunale is housed in a room in the Palazzo Comunale. Its collection includes paintings by Vincenzo Pagani, Durante Nobili and Giovanni Andrea De Magistris. It also includes two frescoes, a polychrome papier-mâché bas-relief and sacred furnishings from the convent of San Francesco. The paintings, frescoes, relief and furnishings represent different artistic forms within the collection.

The Chiesa dei Santi Lorenzo, Silvestro e Ruffino houses Carlo Crivelli's autograph polyptych, dated 1468. Also on display there is Vittore Crivelli's tempera painting on panel, “Madonna della cintola e devoti”. The artworks on display may change. The church itself was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. These details therefore relate to two different periods: the year an artwork was created and the church's later building history.

Museums with Distinct Areas of Focus

The Museo del Cappello di Massa Fermana is located on the ground floor of the castle in the historic town centre. The Museo degli Antichi Mestieri “Lavorando Pedalando”, by contrast, is dedicated to the trades of the past. The two museums therefore have different focuses. Together with the Pinacoteca, they offer several ways to explore the area: artworks, the subject indicated by the name of the Museo del Cappello, and historic trades. When planning your trip, you can decide which of these aspects interests you most.

The 24th edition of the Sagra del castrato took place from 6 to 10 August 2026 in Contrada Madonnetta, Massa Fermana. Both details refer to specific dates in August 2026 and provide a snapshot of events at that time. They should not be understood as dates for future events.

Massa Fermana offers a range of cultural points of interest to help you choose: the art collection in the Palazzo Comunale, the works in the Chiesa dei Santi Lorenzo, Silvestro e Ruffino, the museums and the historic traces in the town centre. Looking for a hotel in Massa Fermana can therefore go hand in hand with choosing a personal focus for your trip.
