Montefalcone Appennino combines a striking rocky ridge with museums, historic buildings and themed routes. The historic town center sits at 758 meters above sea level on a rocky ridge amid high limestone cliffs. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views over the Aso Valley. When looking for a hotel in Montefalcone Appennino, consider what you would like to focus on: are you mainly interested in the town’s history, or are landscapes and themed trails at the heart of your trip?

Museums and historic buildings

Palazzo Felici is a 17th-century building that houses the Alamanno Museum. The museum’s monumental polyptych by Pietro Alamanno was painted between 1475 and 1480. It adds a specific art-historical focus to the range of themes the town has to offer.

The Municipal Museum of Fossils and Minerals has more than 1,200 minerals. Its collection brings together local finds from the Lower Pliocene and fossils from around the world. Two perspectives meet here: the geological history of the region and a collection with an international reach. The museum also offers educational activities at the museum, in local fossil sites and on the nature trails of Bosco del Monte Falcone.

The buildings also reflect different historical themes. The castle has a six-story keep and a panoramic terrace, both of which served defensive and observation functions. The Church of San Pietro in Penne is flanked by well-kept gardens, and its balcony overlooks the cliff. The Teatro del Falco is described as having 69 seats, a gallery and excellent acoustics.

The Convento di San Giovanni in Selva dates back to the 9th century and was founded as an abbey of Farfa. The monastery was renovated in the 18th century. Its architectural details include a cloister with a central fountain and a church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, with a wooden choir dating from 1805.

Rocky landscapes, gardens and the flowering season

Giardino Tronelli is a small park in Palazzo Felici. Winding paths descend there along the cliff of Monte Falcone. In this part of town, the garden and the cliff edge are closely connected to the landscape views described. The historic center also offers views across the Aso Valley.

The CEA Montefalcone is located in the heart of the SIC “Montefalcone Appennino-Smerillo” and the protected floristic area “Bosco di Smerillo e Montefalcone.” Wild orchids bloom on Montefalcone’s cool limestone slopes from late April through early summer, including Orchis mascula, Ophrys apifera and Anacamptis morio. If you are interested in plants, the flowering season provides a specific seasonal consideration for planning your trip.

Themed routes for different interests

The fossil route starts at Monte Falcone and follows the rocky ridge through fossil-bearing strata, natural hollows and terraced gardens. It continues along paths where wooded sections alternate with open viewpoints. This route thus brings together geological themes and changing landscape views.

An official e-bike route starts in the historic center and follows gravel roads and scenic stretches. The religious route “Tra cielo e silenzio: passi di fede nell’antico bosco” starts at the historic churches of Montefalcone Appennino, passes places of worship and ends at the Convento di San Giovanni in Selva. The two routes therefore have distinct themes and different described courses.

Another pilgrimage option is Stage 15 of the Cammino dei Cappuccini between Montefalcone Appennino and Rotella. It is about 20 kilometers long and passes through mountain and hill landscapes. The route includes gravel roads, nature trails and some paved sections.

A seasonal event

Sapori d’Autunno takes place every year in the first few days of October. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the relevant event dates as you plan. Alongside the buildings, collections and routes described as available year-round, the event offers an additional seasonal consideration when choosing when to travel.
