Montegiorgio combines a medieval town layout with art, regional cuisine and opportunities for walks. If you’re looking for a hotel in Montegiorgio, its varied attractions can help you choose your destination: you may be interested in architectural history and artworks, exploring the hilly landscape or discovering local specialties.

Historic Center and Views

The historic center preserves a medieval town layout that follows the three slopes of the hill on which Montegiorgio stands. The town’s form is therefore closely tied to its hilly terrain. From Pincio, the commonly used name for Montegiorgio’s hilltop, panoramic views extend from the Adriatic Sea to the Sibillini Mountains. Historic buildings and the expansive landscape are two distinct aspects of the town’s character.

Churches, Artworks and Theater

The Church of San Francesco was formerly called Santa Maria Grande and was originally built around the year 1000. The Cappella Farfense is attached to the church. Its fresco cycle depicts the discovery of the Cross and is attributed to Antonio Alberti of Ferrara. This attribution is an art-historical assessment, not a confirmed authorship.

The Church of Sant’Andrea houses the Madonna dell’Umiltà, a tempera painting on a wooden panel from 1374 by Francescuccio Ghissi. The work can thus be identified by its artist, medium and date. The Teatro Domenico Alaleona offers a different artistic impression: the neoclassical theater features white-and-gold stucco decorations and ceiling paintings.

On Piazza Alaleona, the Monumento ai Caduti commemorates those who fell in war. It consists of a bronze statue of an infantry soldier on a stepped square marble base; the work is attributed to Gaetano Orsolini. Together, these buildings and artworks offer different ways to explore Montegiorgio’s history and design, from sacred painting to theater architecture and public remembrance.

Crafts and Regional Cuisine

A description from June 2025 introduces Legatoria Ars Antiqua in Montegiorgio and bookbinder Maria Letizia Ranucci. Her work is made using reused and high-quality materials and also involves the technique of paper lamination. The Antica Bottega di Indoratura e Restauro preserves a tradition of gilding on wood that spans seven generations and dates back to the early years of the 19th century. This tradition also includes medieval techniques.

Local specialties include Li caciu’ de Muntijorgio, a traditional dessert with municipal De.Co. recognition. Its preparation and consumption were part of the tradition of the entire local community. Montegiorgio’s cuisine also includes Vincisgrassi, Ciauscolo, artisanal cured meats and Pecorino cheese. Wines from the hills of Fermo include Falerio, Passerina and Rosso Piceno.

Walks and Events

A walking trail in the Piane di Montegiorgio area starts at the Church of S. Angelo in Montiliano and ends at the mill. It is about six kilometers long, takes approximately three hours and is rated as easy. The approximate duration and distance help with planning your time. Wear suitable clothing and take into account the guidance on mobility restrictions.

In Piane, a historical and nature walk is organized on the first Sunday in May and the last Sunday in November. It visits archaeological sites, follows the River Tenna and goes to the Cascades di Sasso. Check the dates again before your trip. Another recurring event is the traditional Fiera de lu succursu: it has been held in Montegiorgio every November for more than 300 years, on the Sunday closest to November 21. Here, too, it is advisable to check the exact date before your trip.

As of September 1, 2025, the Ippodromo San Paolo in Montegiorgio is a harness racing track with a 1,190-meter-long racecourse. Horse racing adds another specific point of interest to the destination’s historical, scenic and culinary attractions.
