Monterubbiano combines theater, churches and historic buildings with an archaeological museum, a network of trails and seasonal festivals. When planning your trip, you can focus on architectural history and cultural sites on the one hand, and events with fixed or changing dates on the other. If you are looking for a hotel, your preferred focus can help you choose when to travel. If you plan to attend a festival, it is advisable to check the specific event dates.

Architecture and History

The Palazzo Comunale dates from the 14th century and features Romanesque-Gothic forms. To visit the palazzo, including the Quadreria and the Museo delle bambole da tutto il mondo, you must contact the municipal tourist office. The Teatro Pagani’s architecture is defined by a horseshoe-shaped auditorium and three tiers of boxes; it has a total of 180 seats. Its form and layout describe the theater space as concretely as the number of seats.

The Chiesa dei Ss. Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista was built in 1238. Its remarkable frescoes date from the 14th and 15th centuries, so the building and its painted decoration belong to different periods. The remains of the old fortifications include Porta del Pero, Porta Sant’Andrea and surviving sections of the walls. The Palazzo Secreti was built in the 17th to 18th centuries over the remains of the Cassero of the Sforza castle. The Ghetto Ebraico, known as “Le Spiagge,” dates from the 15th century.

Cultural Sites and Outdoor Spaces

The Polo culturale San Francesco is a multifunctional facility with an auditorium, a historical-archaeological museum, a library, an exhibition space, an environmental education center and a botanical garden. At the Museo Civico Archeologico, the visitor route begins with a model of the area. It shows the course of the Aso River from the Monti Sibillini to the sea, making the long stretch between the mountains and the coast the starting point for the exhibit.

The San Francesco cloister also has its own distinctive features: a fountain and a walnut tree stand at its center. The neoclassical “Giacomo Leopardi” garden lies on the eastern side of the town and offers panoramic views. Those interested in cultural history can find different perspectives here: from the theater’s architecturally distinctive interior to historic buildings and the depiction of the area in the archaeological museum.

Trails, Festivals and Getting There

Many activities run by the Centro di Educazione Ambientale take place outdoors, beyond its new premises at the San Francesco monastery and cloister, along a dense network of trails. Its newest section runs alongside the castle walls. The trails and the former fortifications can therefore also be considered when planning your trip, alongside the cultural sites.

On Pentecost, Monterubbiano brings the historical reenactment “Sciò la Pica” to life. Its highlight is the ring jousting on Sunday afternoon. Since the date of Pentecost changes every year, check the specific event date before making plans. The fried tagliatelle festival is usually held in the first week of August and includes traditional games, performances and a meal of fried tagliatelle. It is also a good idea to check the dates for the year in question.

By car, you can reach Monterubbiano via the A14: take the Pedaso exit if coming from the south, or the Porto San Giorgio exit if coming from the north. For rail travel, the stations at Pedaso and Porto San Giorgio are the designated access points. Check road and rail connections before you depart. You can then plan your stay around the historic buildings and cultural sites, an event, or a combination of these.
