Montottone combines handmade terracotta with churches, traces of the former castle and local festivals. For a culture-focused trip, ceramic making, the Museo della ceramica e civiltà contadina and historic buildings offer specific points of interest. Ceramics and religious buildings provide different perspectives on the town; events complement these cultural themes.

Hillside Setting and Municipal Area

The municipality is entirely hilly and has a quadrilateral shape. Its territory stretches from the Tenna River to the Indaco; the Ete Vivo, Fosso Rivo and Rio flow through it. The town itself stands on a hill at 277 metres above sea level. This makes it possible to consider the town’s location separately from the wider landscape of the municipal area.

Ceramics as a Craft and Collection

Terracotta production in Montottone is rooted in craftsmanship. The clay is worked by hand; the objects are made on a potter’s wheel turned by foot. They are then fired in a wood-burning kiln and treated with traditional glazes. The Museo della ceramica e civiltà contadina displays household items made from Montottone terracotta, as well as the tools used by potters. The adjoining workshop offers the opportunity to deepen and try out knowledge and practical techniques in ceramics. This provides two different ways to engage with the same subject: viewing the collection and trying things out in practice. The house numbers in Montottone are also made of ceramics and bear the symbols of the seven Contrade.

Churches and Historic Traces

The Convento e Chiesa di San Francesco stands on a wooded hill east of Montottone. The Chiesa di San Francesco was enlarged in 1351 and completely restored in 1767. The two dates mark different phases of construction: the enlargement in 1351 and the complete restoration in 1767. Remains of the former castle walls survive in Montottone. The Cisterna di S. Maria is a public cistern built in the 15th century. The church of Santa Maria Ausiliatrice houses the painting “Madonna in trono con Bambino e SS. Giovanni Battista, S. Giovanni Evangelista, Maddalena e Caterina (sposalizio mistico)”.

Festivals and Dates

A municipal description updated in 2021 names the Palio delle Grazie as a festival that had been celebrated on June 15 for several years. During the event, the Contrade competed for a painted silk banner. In June, the Pro Loco events calendar also listed celebrations in honour of the Madonna delle Grazie as the Sagra degli Gnocchi. The regional register published in January 2025 recorded the Fiera Tradizionale San Lorenzo as taking place annually on August 10 in Contrada Santa Lorenzo. The festivals mentioned are therefore spread across June and August. Check the current dates and programme for each edition before travelling.
