Porto San Giorgio combines a cycling route along the waterfront promenade with a historic town centre and various opportunities to enjoy culture, exercise and scenic views.

Cycling path along the waterfront promenade

The cycling path along the Porto San Giorgio waterfront promenade is part of the Ciclovia Adriatica and continues north through the neighbouring municipalities without interruption. For a trip that includes cycling, this northern extension provides a practical point of reference for planning.

Old town and architectural history

Corso Castel San Giorgio corresponds to the original core of the old town and the former town harbour. A walk along the fortification walls leads from the Corso to the Torre Merlata, also known as Turrimagna. The walk thus links the former town centre with a named destination along the fortification walls.

Rocca Tiepolo was built in 1267 by Lorenzo Tiepolo, who later became Doge of Venice. The Teatro di Porto San Giorgio was completed in 1817 to a design by the architect Giuseppe Locatelli. In 1910, Sigismondo Nardi painted the ceiling with a large allegory of the arts and human destiny. The two dates associated with the theatre mark different stages: completion in 1817 and the ceiling painting in 1910. The parish church dedicated to Saint George was built between 1831 and 1851 in the neoclassical style at the foot of the Rocca. The timeline therefore spans the 13th-century Rocca, the 19th-century theatre and parish church, and the later ceiling painting. Neoclassical architecture draws on forms from antiquity.

Walks and scenic views

Monte della Misericordia is well suited to trekking, leisurely walks and landscape photography. These three activities offer different ways to focus on exercise and appreciating the scenery. The viewpoint on Monte Cacciù offers panoramic views of the entire Adriatic coast and the gentle hills of the Marche; on a clear day, the imposing range of the Monti Sibillini is also visible. The two destinations therefore have different focuses: Monte Cacciù is about far-reaching views, while Monte della Misericordia combines trekking, walking and photography.

Getting there and finding your way

Porto S. Giorgio–Fermo railway station is in the town centre, close to the waterfront promenade. The station is a practical point of reference for your journey, while the promenade marks the route of the Ciclovia Adriatica through the town.
