Sant'Elpidio Morico combines the history of a medieval settlement with churches and art from different centuries. Walls and churches anchor the area's history; a triptych and its original frame are now associated with different places. A cycle ride also leads to the hamlet, while the recurring Sagra dello Spiedino may be a factor when planning your dates.

Local history: walls and crafts

The medieval settlement of Sant'Elpidio Morico was built on a Picene-Roman foundation. In the Middle Ages, it developed as a castrum to monitor the routes between the valleys of the Tenna and the Aso. Extensive sections of the medieval walls remain on the south and west sides. The area around Sant'Elpidio Morico also had a tradition of ceramic and terracotta making.

Churches and art from different centuries

The Chiesa di San Paolo is a Romanesque church dating from the 13th century. The former church of Sant'Elpidio Abate probably dates back further: it was likely built at the beginning of the 11th century, before 1030. Between 1285 and 1424, it was relocated within the castle walls. The collegiate church of Sant'Elpidio Abate was consecrated on 4 November 1424; in 1591, at the request of the local community, the church was elevated to collegiate status. These dates mark different stages in its history: its early origins, its relocation within the castle walls, its consecration, and its later status as a collegiate church.

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo dates from the 17th century and has a neoclassical facade. Vittore Crivelli's triptych was painted for this church in 1496. Today, the work is held at the Diocesan Museum in Fermo, while the original frame remains in Monsampietro. If you would like to see the triptych, check its current location in advance. The work and its frame can thus be considered two different points of reference in the history of art.

Cycle to the hamlet

The “Two Castles, One Valley” cycle route leads from the walls of Monsampietro Morico to the hamlet of Sant'Elpidio Morico. It is suitable for e-bikes and gravel bikes. The route follows scenic roads with gentle climbs and descents and no challenging changes in elevation. The landscape along the route includes olive groves, vineyards and the silhouette of a castle. The cycle route thus adds another perspective on the area and its surroundings to its architectural and artistic history.

Sagra dello Spiedino

The Sagra dello Spiedino is a recurring event in Sant'Elpidio Morico. The 34th edition took place in 2015, and the 42nd edition in 2026, organized by the Pro Loco of Monsampietro Morico. The 2026 edition featured food stalls where visitors could sample skewers; offerings may vary from one edition to the next. If you would like to plan your visit around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.
