Smerillo: Nature, Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Smerillo
Landscape and Nature
At 806 metres above sea level, Smerillo lies on the edge of a rocky ridge on Monte Montefalcone. Its location offers views of the Aso and Tenna valleys as well as the Sibillini Mountains. Woodland is also part of the area’s natural character: the protected, botanically significant Bosco di Smerillo e Montefalcone area includes Smerillo. The Bosco is a well-preserved submontane forest with several relatively rare plant species. Here, a rocky highland landscape meets botanically notable woodland vegetation.
Trails and Rock Formations
The Sentiero della Fessa nature trail begins at Porta Nord. From the town centre, the old path passes through the gate to the Fessa, a spectacular rock cleft formed when part of the rock face broke away. A section of the described trail is currently impassable due to ongoing maintenance work. Check local conditions before setting out on a hike. The trail thus brings together two distinct features: the historic route through Porta Nord and a striking rock formation.
The Anello di Montefalcone Appennino is a 7.5-kilometre trekking route from Montefalcone Appennino to Smerillo. From the hamlet of Durano, you can reach the Fosso delle Anguille, a succession of small lakes and waterfalls. These named destinations offer different ways to experience nature: a described trekking route, a trail to the rock cleft, and a watercourse with small lakes and waterfalls.
History and Culture
The Castrum Smerilli was probably first built sometime between the 9th and 11th centuries. The Romanesque Chiesa di S. Caterina in Smerillo contains frescoes from the 13th century. The dates vary in their degree of precision: the Castrum’s initial construction is uncertain and falls within a broad period, while the frescoes are dated to the 13th century.
The municipal Pinacoteca d’Arte Contemporanea is located at Via A. C. Nobili 11. Together with the frescoes in the Chiesa di S. Caterina, it creates a contrast between medieval and contemporary art. The CEA Bosco di Smerillo is based in the Museo delle Scienze Naturali in Smerillo and offers various activities.
In the hamlet of Val di Tenna, a watermill dating from 1700 stands by the Tenna River. It is another historic landmark. Unlike the uncertain date of the Castrum’s initial construction, a specific year is given for the mill.
Chestnut-Growing Tradition
The Castagnata in Piazza is a traditional festival celebrating the importance of chestnuts in local tradition. Culinary uses include desserts, bread and pizza, as well as roasted chestnuts, flour and beer. Traditional methods are also part of the story, from harvesting and storage to processing. The focus is therefore not only on the finished dish, but also on the journey from chestnut to its many uses. The programme may vary; if you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates in advance.
