Bolognola: Nature, hiking and historic sites
Accommodation in Bolognola
Bolognola combines hiking and nature experiences with a townscape shaped by the Middle Ages. The entire area lies within Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini, and the Fiastrone River also rises here. The historic settlement consists of three medieval districts. You can focus your stay on trails through the mountain landscape, as well as the town’s buildings and art.
Hiking trails and activities around Bolognola
The one-hour “Fra Camosci ed Aquile” route runs from Bolognola to Fonte dell’Aquila and can be done on foot or by bike. Another route, “La Cascata Nascosta,” runs from Bolognola to Gola dell’Acquasanta and is also accessible on foot or by bike. The two destinations give the routes distinct characters: one leads to Fonte dell’Aquila, the other to Gola dell’Acquasanta.
From spring to autumn, trekking trails from Pintura di Bolognola pass through meadows and centuries-old beech forests and cross mountain ridges. Guided excursions through particularly scenic areas of the Sibillini Mountains also start there; routes vary in length and difficulty, and individual offerings may vary. If you prefer cycling, you’ll find an e-bike rental in Pintura with hardtail and full-suspension models. They are intended both for first-time riders and for longer, more challenging tours in the Sibillini Mountains.
The Bike Circus at Bolognola Ski is a practice area that introduces visitors to mountain biking and e-biking and is also suitable for children and beginners. Pintura di Bolognola, three kilometres from the town centre, also has ski lifts and facilities for skiers of all ages. If you’re planning to ski, check the lifts’ current operating hours in advance.
Beech forest, mountain views and Green Park
Macchia Tonda is an almost circular beech forest. It is home to a monumental beech tree estimated to be about 380 years old. The Madonnina, at an altitude of 1,480 metres, offers a different view of the mountain landscape: from there, the panorama stretches all around across the area. A circular trail to the Madonnina passes through beech forests and along streams, with changing mountain views along the way.
At Green Park, the beech forests and the ecosystem of the Sibillini Mountains are also the focus of environmental education activities. The trails include treetop adventure courses with platforms, bridges and suspended crossings. The park also has parking areas, picnic tables, a barbecue area, a natural spring and a refreshment point. The combination of nature activities and available facilities makes Green Park another option for spending time outdoors.
Medieval townscape and historic buildings
Remains of a medieval castle with towered walls have been preserved in Bolognola. A panel depicting the Madonna of the Rosary by Giulio Vergari, dated 1519, is displayed in the parish church. The Chiesa di San Nicolò di Bari also reflects several phases of construction: the church dates from the mid-19th century and stands on an older building erected between the second half of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. Its oldest surviving feature is a bellows organ from the 18th century.
Civil buildings include Palazzo Maurizi, with its particularly finely crafted early 19th-century decoration. The painter Luigi Spazza, who came from Camerino, frescoed its rooms in 1824. Palazzo Primavera is one of Bolognola’s oldest civil buildings and dates from the 16th century. There, the “I telai di Brunella” workshop offers a hands-on introduction to traditional weaving. When planning your visit, you can choose between trails and activities in the landscape and a visit to the historic sites.
