Morrovalle’s defining features include an international collection of nativity scenes, art from churches in the surrounding area, historic buildings and religious traditions. Pincio adds a public park, designed for walks and relaxation, to these cultural attractions. To plan your trip, you can distinguish between the sites according to their different highlights.

Art and Collections

The Museo internazionale del presepio di Morrovalle is housed in the underground rooms of the former 18th-century monastery of the Augustinian Fathers. A museum description last updated in 2021 lists around 800 nativity scenes from around the world. The pieces are made from a variety of materials and crafted using diverse techniques. The focus here is therefore on an internationally oriented collection. If you are planning a museum visit, check the current opening hours in advance.

The focus is different at the Museo civico pinacoteca “Palazzo Lazzarini”: its core collection consists of paintings from churches in the surrounding area, particularly the Chiesa di Sant’Agostino. The art gallery includes panel paintings and canvases from the 16th to the 18th century. In contrast to the nativity scene museum, the focus here is on regional religious paintings and works from different centuries.

Architecture and Historic Buildings

The Palazzo Lazzarini building dates back to the 13th century. Its medieval basic structure and finely crafted stone portal give the building distinctive architectural features. The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo also combines striking exterior and interior features: its unplastered brick façade extends across two levels, one above the other; the single-nave interior has side chapels and preserves valuable elements from the 18th century.

Ghibelline merlons and rib vaults in rooms below street level have been preserved at the Palazzo del PodestĂ . The Palazzo del Comune is distinguished by a long portico with round arches resting on square columns. The Torre civica stands right next to it. Dating from the 14th century, it has a square ground plan and is also adorned with Ghibelline merlons. Together, these buildings showcase different forms of medieval architecture.

Porta Alvaro dates from the 14th century and is the main entrance to the historic centre. An inscription on the gate, “Civitas Eucharestiae,” commemorates the Eucharistic Miracle of 1560. Beyond the gate, outside the city walls, lies the former Franciscan monastery. The restored monastery church was converted by the municipal administration into an auditorium for a range of cultural activities.

Religious Traditions and History

The tradition of the Eucharistic Miracle is associated with the former Franciscan monastery. It tells of an unharmed consecrated host being found after a fire in the church attached to the monastery. The story of the Convento dei Padri Passionisti is a separate one: the monastery included a building that once housed pilgrims from further afield. Francesco Possenti came to the convent for his novitiate; he later became known as Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. The former pilgrim lodging is part of the monastery’s history and does not describe present-day accommodation.

The Santuario della Madonna dell’Acqua Santa di Morrovalle also has its own religious history. It originated as a small temple dedicated to the Madonna della Neve. Together with the inscription at Porta Alvaro and the historic monasteries, this site offers another insight into Morrovalle’s religious traditions.

Pincio and Travel Planning

Pincio is a public park overlooking the gentle hills of the Province of Macerata. Designed for walks and relaxation, it offers a different experience from museums, churches and palazzi. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between art and architecture and a break surrounded by greenery, without treating the various sites as a single itinerary.

Morrovalle Stazione is an area centred around a railway station, offering connections to popular destinations in the Marche region. If you would like to take train connections into account when planning your trip, check current services and operating schedules separately.
