Pievebovigliana: Culture, Trails and Landscape
Accommodation in Pievebovigliana
Pievebovigliana combines a well-preserved medieval townscape with religious, artistic and industrial history, as well as nature experiences. The town lies partly within the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini. This makes it an appealing destination for planning a trip that combines historic buildings, trails and landscape.
Medieval townscape and art
The historic settlement retains its well-preserved medieval street plan; picturesque streets and stairways shape the townscape. At the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, the Romanesque crypt and an inscription dated 1162 point to medieval origins. The Chiesa di San Giusto was built between the 11th and 12th centuries on a hill above the valley below. Its circular layout, with four apses and a dome, defines its architecture. Preserved frescoes from the late 14th century and historic paintings, including a work by Venanzo da Camerino, add to its artistic significance.
The Castello di Beldiletto reflects a different architectural history: Giovanni da Varano built it in the 14th century; in the 15th century, it was transformed into a Renaissance villa. The Chiesa e Convento di San Francesco also dates from the 14th century. The Museo Civico “Raffaele Campelli” was founded in 1936 to preserve and showcase the history and art of the municipal area. Casa Carradori houses paintings from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Crafts and local history
The Gualchiera Tintoria Cianni is a historic fulling and dyeing mill powered by water. Wool and hemp fabrics were processed and dyed there. The original facility dates from the 17th century; the mill opened in the first half of the 19th century. The history of crafts is also part of the town: in 1942, Maria Ciccotti opened a workshop with an attached school in Pievebovigliana.
The Distilleria Varnelli was founded in Pievebovigliana in 1868 and continues to operate as the oldest active liqueur producer in the Marche region. Together with the historic workshops and buildings, it shows that the town’s history is shaped not only by religious architecture but also by crafts and production.
Trails through local history and landscape
The 7.8-kilometre circular route “Tra storia e cultura” focuses especially on Pievebovigliana. The Sentiero Natura N2 in the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini is classified as a tourist trail (T). It is 4–6 kilometres long and takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes; the elevation difference is 323 metres. It starts and ends in Isola di Pievebovigliana or Roccamaia. Along the way, it passes through chestnut woods and wheat fields and introduces visitors to historic farming practices. At 7.8 kilometres, the cultural circular route is longer than the stated distance of the N2; an approximate duration and elevation difference are also given for the N2.
At Lago di Boccafornace
Lago di Boccafornace is an artificial lake fed by an intermittently flowing karst spring. Nature-viewing opportunities depend on the season and conditions: during dry periods, a natural cave beside the lake can be visited; in winter, the karst water siphon may be observed when the water level is suitable. A circular path of about 2 kilometres follows the shore and includes an artistic installation featuring inscribed stones.
Green spaces and getting around town
Parco Girolamo Varnelli is a tree-filled area with benches and a central fountain at the junction of Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Via Roma. Piazza Vittorio Veneto is also home to an e-bike station with charging, tire inflation and facilities for minor repairs. A footbridge dedicated to Maria Cortesi connects the park to the Giardino delle Api; after future work, it may be worth checking this connection locally again.
The Giardino delle Api, established in 2024, has 54 plant species selected to attract bees. An educational trail focuses on beekeeping and environmental protection. The town therefore offers a public green space, a garden with an ecological focus and practical e-bike facilities, all without requiring a longer route.

Its landscape includes a lake, a river and agricultural land. Also in the wider area is the Asinovia: the hiking trail starts at Peschiera in the municipality of Valfornace and can be explored with donkeys.
