Discover Auditore
Accommodation in Auditore
Auditore brings together a historic borgo and the legacy of the Gothic Line. The town lies on a rocky spur above the Foglia Valley; the spur rises about 100 metres. This gives you two cultural highlights to choose from when planning your trip: the fortifications and architectural features in the town, and the museum in Casinina, which explores the history of the 20th century. Auditore is also a stop on the Francesco di Giorgio Martini itinerary. If you are looking for hotels in Auditore, you can choose your destination based on these different cultural themes.
Location and historical layers
A signposted route leads from the centre of Casinina to Auditore; the distance is about three kilometres. As signs and road conditions may change, it is advisable to check the route before setting out. Auditore’s history also spans different periods: in the late Middle Ages, the town passed from the direct rule of the Malatesta of Rimini to the Counts Ridolfi. In 1944, part of Auditore’s territory was incorporated into the Gothic Line by the Germans. The history of medieval rule and the events of the Second World War therefore belong to different chapters of the town’s history.
Borgo, walls and architectural features
The historic borgo is still enclosed by intact defensive walls. The historic centre also retains angular bastions and a 15th-century hexagonal civic tower. A walk along the old walls can be a good way to begin your visit to the borgo. Along the way, you will encounter different forms of fortification and the distinctive hexagonal tower—features that can guide your walk through the historic centre.
Just outside the walls is the parish church of Auditore. It houses Mariano Medici’s painting La Pentecoste from 1772. If you would like to see the painting during your visit, check in advance whether the church is open to visitors.
Castelnuovo in the historic area
Castelnuovo, a former fortified village, lies in Auditore’s historic area. Today it is almost entirely uninhabited and is interesting to visit for its history. Castelnuovo broadens the picture beyond the borgo to include the area’s earlier settlement history. If you are planning a visit, check access in advance.
The Gothic Line in Casinina
The Museo Storico della Linea Gotica is located in the nearby village of Casinina. It is the first and most significant historical museum dedicated to the 20th century in central Italy. The collection includes thousands of artefacts, documents, photographs, uniforms and military vehicles from the battlefields of the Gothic Line. It brings together different records of the war: written documents and photographs as well as uniforms and vehicles.
The museum also includes the Parco della Memoria, with outdoor exhibitions and monuments. Guided tours of the original Gothic Line bunker are offered during certain seasons. The bunker has been restored and is maintained by the museum’s managing organisation. As the tours are seasonal, check the schedule before your trip.
More cultural activities and trip planning
