Canavaccio lies on the plain at the bottom of the middle Metauro Valley. At the same time, the history of the place goes back a long way and includes archaeological traces, monastic connections, and church art. If you are choosing a destination for its cultural history, landscape, or walking routes, you will find several different points of interest here.

Landscape along the Metauro

The Metauro River forms the southern boundary of Canavaccio. The village lies on the valley plain and is surrounded by hills. These are considered typical of Raphael’s paintings.

Monasteries, the Pieve, and early history

The village of the Pieve di S. Stefano di Gaifa is documented from the 13th century. Its origins go back to the Benedictine monastery of S. Michele Arcangelo, which dates from the 8th to 10th centuries. The Benedictine monastery of S. Angelo di Gaifa near Canavaccio was already flourishing in 1110.

The Pieve di S. Stefano di Gaifa was the mother church of the castles of Primicilio and Gaifa. Canavaccio is an archaeologically significant site with traces of Picenian settlements.

Churches and preserved art

Santa Maria Assunta is a modern parish church dating from the 1960s and was consecrated in 1967. It preserves paintings of the Madonna of Loreto and the Saints, which come from S. Andrea in Primicilio, as well as furnishings and paintings of various origins.

Routes and historical landmarks

The old Torre Brombolona watchtower stands on the hills above Canavaccio. Numerous paths lead from Canavaccio through the surrounding hills as far as Urbino. In addition, the proposed route through the Gaifa Valley connects Urbino and Fossombrone; it passes the castles of Primicilio and Gaifa, as well as medieval churches. For the 2026 program, “I Mercoledì della Pieve” was scheduled to begin on May 13, with Wednesday events in Canavaccio. The series brought together nature, art, and history in Gaifa; culinary and food-and-wine experiences connected to the region were also part of the planned program. If the event is relevant to your travel plans, check your travel dates against the schedule for the relevant edition well in advance.

The different descriptions of the starting point and destination are useful for orientation: the paths from Canavaccio lead through the hills to Urbino, while the proposed route through the Gaifa Valley connects Urbino with Fossombrone and includes historical landmarks. When choosing a route, you can first decide which connection best suits your travel plans. For specific planning of the proposed route through the Gaifa Valley, check trail conditions locally.
