Discover Colbordolo
Accommodation in Colbordolo
Explore Colbordolo through its castle, old town centre, religious art and places to visit around Monte di Colbordolo. These different highlights can help you plan your stay: whether you are interested in historic buildings, art or outdoor activities, you will find specific points of interest here.
Castle, gate tower and older traces
Colbordolo Castle has been documented since 1213. A bull issued by Pope Innocent III mentions it in connection with the holdings of the Abbey of San Tommaso in Foglia. The old town centre can be reached via a ramp paved with stone slabs that leads to the gate tower. The tower is Colbordolo’s landmark and a distinctive reference point for finding your way around the historic town centre.
The 19th-century Oratory of Madonna del Monte stands on the road from Colbordolo to Montefabbri. The remains of an ancient aqueduct are also visible at the foot of Monte di Colbordolo. It once supplied the village fountain and washhouse. These traces tell different parts of the town’s history: from the medieval castle to a later religious building and the former water supply.
The Church of San Giovanni Battista and its art
The Church of San Giovanni Battista is a parish church and an architectural heritage site. It retains its original single-nave structure in the Neo-Romanesque style. A single-nave church has one main nave; here, this layout is specifically part of the building’s inherited architectural form.
The church houses a painting by Claudio Ridolfi dating from 1605. It depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, along with Saints Joseph, Mary Magdalene, Dominic and Roch. The painting is set into a gilded wooden altar, whose 15 panels depict the Mysteries of the Rosary. This allows the individual dated work and the subjects depicted across the entire altar to be distinguished without separating them.
Giovanni Santi and the Parco delle Muse e delle Ninfe
El Paternal Mio Nido – Centro di documentazione Giovanni Santi is a museum, gallery or collection at Via Roma, 61022 Colbordolo (PU). The documentation centre is dedicated to the artistic and literary work of Giovanni Santi, who was born in Colbordolo and was the father of Raphael Sanzio. The exhibition rooms contain photographic reproductions and enlargements of details from his paintings. They are intended to convey a faithful picture of 15th-century court culture. If you plan a visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
Since 2019, the documentation centre has been the starting point for the Parco delle Muse e delle Ninfe. The park comprises 28 stops connected with Santi and the themes of nymphs, water and landscape. They extend across the entire area as far as Urbino. The number of stops and their thematic focus give the park a different emphasis from a visit to a single work of art or church: here, the connections between the artist, the landscape and recurring motifs take centre stage.
Monte di Colbordolo: excursions and cycling route
Monte di Colbordolo is traditionally described as a destination for picnics and excursions. The steep climb opens up views across the Apsa and Foglia valleys. The mountain therefore offers two distinct experiences: a place to spend time outdoors and a climb with views of both valleys.
A route named “Colbordolo” is also described for cyclists. A route description published on 27 April 2021 runs from Vallefoglia via Colbordolo to Montefabbri and classifies the route as expert. It describes the route as scenic and notes steeper climbs and descents. If you plan to cycle this route, check the current route and conditions before setting off; the description dates from April 2021.
Colbordolo’s community oven is also part of its local heritage. It is still fully operational and bears witness to the social life of the rural community. The oven adds a glimpse of communal everyday culture to the traces of the church, art and water supply.
