Frontino combines its location in an interregional nature park with monastic and art history, as well as two cultural themes: a food festival and a literary award. When planning your trip, it is worth exploring these distinct highlights. They range from the town’s geographical setting and historic buildings to events that focus on food or literature.

Nature Park and Geographical Setting

Frontino is located in the 4,791-hectare Parco Naturale Interregionale del Sasso Simone e Simoncello. The protected area extends across the provinces of Pesaro-Urbino and Rimini and includes the municipalities of Carpegna, Frontino, Montecopiolo, Pian di Meleto, Pennabilli and Pietrarubbia. Its reach across provincial and municipal boundaries gives the protected area a wider regional scope. For choosing a destination, Frontino’s location within it provides a specific geographical point of reference.

Monasteries and Art History

The Convento di Montefiorentino is traditionally associated with its founder, Francis of Assisi, in 1213 and is one of the largest monasteries in the Marche region. The convent houses the Cappella dei Conti Oliva. It was built in 1484 and attributed to Francesco De Simone Ferrucci da Fiesole.

The Monastero di San Girolamo is another historic landmark. Built in 1500, it comprises a church and monastery, an altarpiece by Bernardino da Longiano, a fresco of the Last Supper in the refectory, and the former monks’ cells. The refectory is the monastery’s dining hall; the Last Supper fresco is therefore located in a communal space. The former cells complement the religious and artistic elements with spaces once used for monastic life.

The dates refer to different events: 1213 marks the traditional association of the convent with Francis of Assisi, 1484 the construction of the Cappella dei Conti Oliva, and 1500 the establishment of the Monastero di San Girolamo. This distinguishes the convent’s tradition, the chapel’s origins and the monastery’s history chronologically.

Events and Culture

Il Trionfo del Tartufo nero has been held in Frontino Capoluogo since 1996. During the event, food stalls and stalls selling local, traditional, handcrafted and antique products are set up in the squares and streets of the medieval town center. The nature park provides the wider geographical setting, while the Trionfo takes place in the medieval town center.

The Premio Frontino Montefeltro offers a different cultural focus. Carlo Bo and Antonio Mariani founded it together in 1981. Over the years, the award has evolved, with writers and publishers of different sizes taking part. If you are interested in literature and publishing, this award adds another cultural perspective to the food-focused event.

If you are planning a trip around the Trionfo, also check the dates for your preferred travel period.
