Those interested in medieval architecture and its literary legacy will find several specific points of interest in Gradara. The Rocca di Gradara is a work of Italian fortress architecture. Its last major restoration took place from 1921 to 1923 and gave the building a distinctly medieval and neo-medieval character.

Castle, Borgo and Defensive Walls

The Castello di Gradara and its fortified Borgo are among the best-preserved medieval complexes in Italy. The outer of the two defensive walls stretches for almost 800 metres. The Rocca also includes 14 rooms open to visitors, furnished with antique furniture and works of art. This means the fortifications can be explored not only through the outer complex but also through its furnished interiors.

The Ramparts Walk has its own measurement: the 300-metre panoramic path runs along Gradara’s old defensive walls. The length of the path and the measurement of the wall describe different things; together, they show two scales of the complex. Keeping these measurements in context makes it possible to distinguish the walking route from the extent of the outer wall.

Literary Legacy and Museums

Tradition holds that the Rocca di Gradara was the setting for the tragedy of Paolo and Francesca. Dante and his verses in Canto V of the Divine Comedy immortalised the story. The Rocca’s architecture is thus linked to a literary interpretation of the place: Gradara can be explored both through its fortifications and through the legacy associated with them.

The Museo Storico Gradara brings together underground heritage and a collection on siege warfare. The museum includes access to a medieval cave dating from the 4th or 5th century AD; it forms part of an extensive underground network in Gradara. The museum also displays a scale-model collection of Roman and medieval siege engines, considered unique in Italy. The cave and models offer different perspectives: underground history on the one hand, and siege technology on the other.

The MARV Museo d’Arte Rubini Vesin is housed in Palazzo Rubini Vesin. The palace has antique grottoes and underground rooms dating from the 16th century. The halls of the piano nobile acquired their present appearance in 1707. The exhibition programme offers a different focus from the historic rooms: it includes quarterly exhibitions of modern and contemporary graphic art. Individual exhibitions may change.

Walking Route, Birds of Prey and Views

The Teatro dell’Aria is located just outside Gradara’s historic centre, along the Passeggiata degli innamorati. In the park, visitors can watch eagles, falcons, vultures and nocturnal birds of prey in free flight. Experiences may vary by season. The location combines its setting along the Passeggiata with a special focus on observing birds of prey.

The Giardino degli Ulivi di via Cappuccini, at the foot of the western castle walls, offers another perspective. There is a stone amphitheatre surrounded by a garden. You can spend time in the garden and enjoy views towards the sea. While the Ramparts Walk follows the old walls, the Giardino degli Ulivi offers a place to pause and look towards the sea.
