When looking for hotels in Lunano, it is worth first considering the town’s themes: its castle and river landscape, nature trails, churches and the Festa della Castagna offer different starting points for planning a trip. The places and activities below can help you decide whether to focus your choice on outdoor activities, cultural history or a seasonal event.

Nature trails and landscapes around Lunano

Castello di Lunano stands on a hill above the confluence of the Mutino stream and the Foglia River. It was founded shortly after the year 1000. The remains of Castello degli Ubaldini are also still visible. The castle and river landscape give the town’s history a tangible geographical setting.

Many nature trails in the municipality of Lunano are directly connected to Parco interregionale del Sasso Simone e Simoncello. One example is the Sentiero del Beato Lando, an environmental and biodiversity trail that starts at Castello di Lunano and reaches Pietrafagnana di Pietrarubbia. Along the trail, 100 markers identify plant and flower species by their scientific and common names, as well as their flowering periods. Six rest areas and signs about old villages complement the route.

Another trail connects Convento francescano di Monte Illuminato with Parco Sasso Simone e Simoncello. The ways to use it vary by season: in summer, it can be explored on foot, by mountain bike and on horseback; in winter, it can be used with snowshoes and cross-country skis. Check local trail conditions before setting out. For cycling, Lunano is also one of the municipalities connected to the Bike Tour alta valle del Metauro e del Foglia. The circular route is more than 270 kilometres long and has four loops with different levels of difficulty and elevation gain. Unlike the Sentiero del Beato Lando, which has named start and end points, this is a larger circular route with several loops.

Sport fishing is also among the activities in the municipality: Lunano has three lakes where it is practised.

Churches, convent and organ

Chiesa Santi Cosma e Damiano was built in 1889 to a design by architect Domenico Giampaoli from Peglio. It has three naves and a tall bell tower in the Corinthian style. Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine dates from the 17th century and is in the heart of the Borgo. Its features include a small bell tower and an old bell; the church is venerated during the Marian celebration.

The restored complex of Conventino di Monte Illuminato includes large parts of the convent, a bell tower and a chapel with an umbrella vault. The history of the Antico Organo di Pietro Nachini is also linked to a convent church: the organ was made between 1765 and 1775 for the church of San Francesco of the Padri Minori Osservanti in Fano. Today, the restored and fully functioning instrument is located above the entrance to the parish church and is used during celebrations.

The Festa della Castagna

The Festa della Castagna takes place every year on the third weekend of October. Scenes of rural life are recreated in the streets and squares of Lunano. Traditional dishes featuring chestnuts in various recipes are also served; the specific food offerings may vary from one edition to another. The event thus complements the historic buildings and nature trails with a seasonal glimpse of local festival culture.
