Montefelcino lies on the Metauro River. Historic buildings, religious art and the Museo degli antichi mestieri itineranti give a stay a range of cultural focuses. The timeline spans from the castle, probably built around the year 1000, to photographs and objects from the First and Second World Wars. Local events and a market featuring dishes from the cuisine of the Marche region can also shape your travel plans.

Getting There and Location

Montefelcino is 5 km from the Via Flaminia. The route from Ponte degli Alberi passes through the small, picturesque valley of the Rio Puto; Ponte degli Alberi is 21.7 km from Fano. The 5 km refers to Montefelcino’s distance from the Via Flaminia, while the 21.7 km refers to the distance between Ponte degli Alberi and Fano. Check road conditions and your navigation before travelling.

Castle, Walls and Palazzo

The historic centre of Montefelcino is enclosed by walls and entered through a gate that forms part of the former town hall. Montefelcino Castle was probably built around the year 1000. The Palazzo del Feudatario represents a later phase in the area’s building history. Count Fabio Landriani, Lord of Montefelcino and vassal of Guidobaldo della Rovere, had it built between 1571 and 1583. The castle and palazzo thus represent distinctly different historical building periods.

Features of the palazzo include a monumental fireplace bearing the Rovere coat of arms, capitals, sail vaults and a sandstone portal. These details offer specific points of reference for exploring its architectural history: alongside its period of construction, you can also look at the building’s architecture, from the fireplace and its coats of arms to the vaults and portal.

Church Art and Historical Records

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul houses a baptismal font from the 16th or 17th century and a folk-style painting of the Baptism of Jesus dating from 1700. A sandstone slab comes from the former church. Its Latin inscription refers to the parish priest Tiberio and the sculptor Cristoforo. The dates of the font and painting offer a specific point of comparison: the font is assigned to one of two centuries, while the painting bears the date 1700.

Nearby, just outside Montefelcino, stands the Church of San Severo. It dates from the late 13th century and contains a wooden crucifix from the 15th century. This nearby site adds another church, with its own historical reference points, to Montefelcino’s historical and religious themes.

Museum, History and Local Events

In Montemontanaro, within the municipality of Montefelcino, the Museo degli antichi mestieri itineranti displays bicycles once used by itinerant craftspeople and traders. They document the period from the 1920s to the 1950s of the 20th century. The museum also includes a collection of photographs and original objects from the First and Second World Wars. Visits are possible by prior reservation.

The museum has a different focus from the palazzo and church art: it centres on bicycles from the working lives of itinerant craftspeople and traders, as well as historical photographs and objects. This makes it possible to distinguish architectural records, individual works of art, and themes from working and everyday life.

In Sterpeti, the municipality and Pro Loco of Montefelcino organise a historical reenactment of the Battle of the Metaurus. It takes place periodically, but not every year. If you would like to include the event in your trip, check the announced dates in advance.

Dishes from the Marche Region

At the Mercatino del Feudatario, several inns and osterias serve typical dishes from the cuisine of the Marche region. Participating venues may vary; the offering is tied to the Mercatino.
