Montegrimano sits on a spur above the Conca Valley, offering views across the valley, at an altitude of around 600 metres. When planning your trip, you can focus on the medieval borgo, individual buildings or walking routes. Consider whether you mainly want to explore the historic centre or set aside time for a longer loop.

Borgo, towers and churches

The historic centre has a spiral layout of medieval origin. The Torre Civica was built in the 14th century as part of a castle fortified by the Montefeltro family. The layout and the tower offer different points of interest: the town’s shape defines the historic centre, while the Torre Civica recalls the fortified castle.

The Chiesa di San Silvestro was built in the late 18th century to a design by Cosimo Morelli. It houses an organ with nearly 500 pipes, listed as a cultural asset of the Marche region. The parish church also preserves eight large-format paintings dating from the 17th to the 19th century. Thus, the same church brings together a later architectural design, a large musical instrument and artworks from several centuries.

Another historic building is the residence of the Massaioli family, built in the 17th century at the entrance to the town and now used as the town hall. Its entrance staircase, a fireplace, vaulted cellars and an ice house have been preserved. Alongside the tower and church, the building offers a different, civic point of reference for the town’s architectural history.

Walks and loop routes

The Cippo di Garibaldi commemorates the military leader’s passage through the area in 1849. Set among forests and hills, it is a destination for walks and trekking. Here, a specific historical event meets a landscape that invites you to explore on foot.

The Giro del Monte San Lorenzo starts in Monte Grimano Terme and passes through Ca’ Secco. The 15.7-kilometre loop is intended for mountain biking and trekking. The route is described as suitable for all levels; at the same time, good fitness is required for the mountain-bike ride. Bear both points in mind when planning, especially if you intend to ride the loop by mountain bike.

A panoramic walkway along the walls of the borgo opened in June 2014. Check the current condition of the path before your visit. This will help you distinguish the walk from the longer route described as a loop.

Observatory and thermal history

The Osservatorio Astronomico Monte San Lorenzo lies on the southern slope of Monte San Lorenzo, at 536 metres above sea level. It can be reached via provincial road SP130, which connects the Conca Valley with the Foglia Valley. A UAI article dated 6 December 2022 describes telescope observations accompanied by experts and visits to the meteorite collection. Check the current visiting options before your trip.

The area’s thermal history includes alkaline, salt-bromine-iodine and sulphurous therapeutic waters that spring from the slopes of nearby Monte S. Paolo. The hydrotherapy facility that uses these waters is temporarily closed. The thermal park at Monte Grimano Terme is also currently closed. If you are considering visiting, check its current status before your trip.

The different options are clear: the borgo and its buildings represent the town’s history, the path along the walls offers a panoramic walk, and the Giro is a designated loop route with a known length and activity profile. These distinctions can help you plan your trip to Montegrimano around your interests.
