Piagge was built on several small plateaus on a steep slope of the Apennines. This location gives the town a terraced topographical shape and defines the impression created by its settlement pattern. When planning your visit, you can choose between different areas of focus: the Ipogeo, historic buildings and themed trails. This lets you shape your stay around specific places and activities, rather than getting to know Piagge through just one attraction.

Ipogeo, Castle and Town Tower

The Ipogeo di Piagge combines a cruciform floor plan with symmetrical geometric and symbolic reliefs on the walls and ceiling. During a visit, you can shift your attention between the layout and the motifs. The cruciform design gives the space a clear basic shape; the reliefs make the walls and ceiling equally important parts of its design.

The medieval castle of Piagge is still inhabited. Its walls, dating from the 15th century, survive; they were rebuilt in the mid-16th century by the Della Rovere family. Thus, a single building brings together a medieval history and a later reconstruction that can be clearly dated. The castle’s residential use is also part of its character, though it should be distinguished from its construction history.

On Piazza della Torre, the town tower rises 15 metres above the fortifications. The tower offers panoramic views. This gives it a different emphasis from the Ipogeo: there, the layout and reliefs shape the impression; here, it is the view. These are two different ways to experience Piagge when choosing historic places to visit.

Walks and Agriculture

Piagge offers themed walks on foot or by bicycle along signposted routes. Choosing between walking and cycling gives you different options for planning your day; the themed approach provides the trails’ subject matter. If you enjoy combining architectural history with outdoor activity, you can make a walk or bike ride a separate focus alongside the individual buildings.

The visitor tour at Azienda Agraria Guerrieri includes a visit to an experimental vineyard with 27 different grape varieties. The Azienda also offers an educational farm that visitors can enter. There, you will find native poultry breeds such as Livornese and Anconetana, as well as ponies, goats, rabbits, pigeons and peacocks. The two offerings have different emphases: the experimental vineyard focuses on the variety of grape types, while the educational farm showcases different groups of animals. This lets you consider winegrowing and agriculture as separate themes alongside architectural history and landscape.

The visitor information for the Ipogeo lists visits on Saturdays from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and visits by appointment on other days. Before travelling, confirm whether this arrangement applies to your planned visit.
