Piandimeleto: Geological History and the Legacy of the Conti Oliva
Accommodation in Piandimeleto
Piandimeleto brings together a range of highlights for a trip: natural history collections, medieval architecture and trails in the regional park. The town is located in the Parco Regionale Sasso Simone e Simoncello. Several hiking trails start in San Sisto di Piandimeleto, giving hikers and other visitors access to the park. When planning your trip, you can decide whether museums and historical landmarks, a hike or a combination of these themes will shape your stay.
Natural History Collections
The Museo di Scienze della Terra houses around 5,000 exhibits. These include rock samples, the Erbario delle Marche and an exhibition on the development of the Earth, with information panels. The collection ranges from tangible natural materials to an account of geological development; the herbarium adds a botanical dimension. The Museo del Fungo in San Sisto di Piandimeleto focuses on something different: more than 200 plaster models show the most common mushroom species in the Montefeltro area. The two museums offer different ways to explore natural history—with rocks, a herbarium and the history of the Earth on one side, and model mushrooms on the other.
Visits to the Museo di Scienze della Terra are possible on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, by prior reservation. It is closed seasonally from October 1 to March 30. If you plan to visit, check the visiting arrangements before your trip.
Abbey, Castle and Sacred Art
The Abbazia di Santa Maria del Mutino dates back to the 12th century and was already mentioned in a document from 1131. The Castello dei Conti Oliva marks a later turning point in the town’s history: Francesco Sforza conquered it in 1445, after which the Oliva family rebuilt the castle. The church of S. Biagio contains two Gothic tombstones of the Conti Oliva, as well as a fresco dated 1576 depicting the Madonna, the Child and saints.
The abbey, castle and church each offer a different historical perspective. The abbey points to the medieval legacy, the history of the Castello to the events around 1445, and S. Biagio to specific works of sacred art from the 16th century. Together, they provide a sense of chronology, although not all the landmarks belong to the same period or are of the same type.
The Palio dei Conti Oliva
The Palio dei Conti Oliva takes place at the end of July as a historical reenactment and includes archery competitions. As a recurring event, it offers a different focus from the buildings and collections: history is brought to life as part of an event. If you are planning a trip around the Palio, check the specific dates in advance.
Hiking Trails and Park Area
The hiking trails starting in San Sisto di Piandimeleto give hikers and other visitors access to the Parco Regionale del Sasso Simone e Simoncello. Trails in the park area thus complement the town’s natural history and historical attractions. A park notice dated June 28, 2024, referred to work that was then underway to update trail signage in an area of the Parco Interregionale del Sasso Simone e Simoncello that also includes Piandimeleto. For guidance, we recommend checking the latest park notices before setting out on a hike.
