San Lorenzo in Campo lies in the rural hills of the Marche, in the Cesano Valley. In the historic centre, the original town layout can be traced through narrow lanes and entrance arches. The medieval defensive wall has towers; only the battlements are currently missing. The townscape, museums and theatre offer different perspectives, from the valley’s geological changes and finds from the municipal area to 19th-century theatre architecture.

Townscape and museums

The Museo Archeologico del Territorio di Suasa is housed in the Palazzo della Rovere. It presents the development of the environment and human settlement in the Cesano Valley. Six rooms trace the valley’s geological development through fossils of Pleistocene animal and plant life. The second room displays lithic artefacts found in the area of San Lorenzo in Campo. The museum thus brings together a view of the region’s natural history and specific finds from the municipal area.

The Museo delle Terre Marchigiane offers a different perspective on local culture, with more than 3,000 objects. Its four themed routes lead through “Places of Life”, with reconstructed areas of a rural sharecropping household; “Places of Encounter”, with spaces for leisure and social exchange; “Old Crafts”, with workshops and workspaces used by artisans; and “Collections”, with sections on ceramics and objects made of copper and iron. Reconstructed interiors are brought to life with images and sounds, providing a comprehensive sensory experience. The themes range from domestic life and places to meet to work and collection pieces.

Theatre and events

The Teatro Comunale “Mario Tiberini” is also located on the piano nobile of the Palazzo della Rovere. This 19th-century theatre is dedicated to the local tenor. Two tiers of boxes and a gallery box define the interior, which also features Art Nouveau fresco decorations. A theatre season featuring plays and children’s theatre takes place throughout the year. If you would like to combine your visit with a performance, check the dates for the relevant period, as schedules may change.

The Sagra del Castagnolo is also part of the town’s events calendar: it has been held in San Lorenzo in Campo on Easter Monday for more than 50 years. If you would like to plan your trip around this holiday, check the dates for the relevant year in advance.

Routes in the municipal area

There are different types of routes to choose from for a hike. The first municipal trekking route runs for 7 km from San Lorenzo in Campo to Montalfoglio, with an elevation gain of 200 m. The 4 km Sentiero di Bagnara, by contrast, is a loop along the Cesano River: it runs from the Mulino Gazzetti via the Ponte dell’acqua purgativa to the “laghetto” picnic area and back. The routes therefore differ in length, course and stated elevation gain. Route details may change; check them before setting out.

The Cammino dei Lavatoi is a cultural, natural and scenic route that includes the town centre of San Lorenzo in Campo and the hamlet of Montalfoglio. For tourist information about the entire municipal area, contact the Punto I.A.T. If you would like to use this service, check the current service conditions in advance.
