For a stay in Sassofeltrio, you can choose between two clear focuses: the history of the fortified town and the marked trails in the area. There are also views from the public park, a spring near Sant’Anastasio, and cultural and culinary points of interest. These themes can help you plan your trip around your interests and then look for a hotel in Sassofeltrio.

Landscape, Walls, and Views

Sassofeltrio sits on a gypsum-rock outcrop near the middle stretch of the Conca Valley. The historic center is still surrounded by imposing defensive walls that bear witness to its medieval origins. At the highest point is the public park, “La Rocca.” From there, panoramic views extend over the sea, the hills of Montefeltro, and the Apennine range. The park is also associated with the nickname “Terrazza del Montefeltro.” The municipal museum, “Piccole storie di guerra,” is housed in the same building as the public park.

The History of the Rocca

Historical sources mention Sassofeltrio as early as 756 AD. A later turning point came in June 1463, when Federico da Montefeltro finally conquered the Castello dei Sasso after a violent siege. The Rocca was rebuilt on the site of the destroyed Malatesta fortification. The Sienese military architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini was commissioned to oversee its reconstruction. Thus, the town’s early historical references, a specific conquest, and its later reconstruction stand as distinct stages in its history.

Marked Trails and Nature

The Sassofeltrio area has nature trails marked with CAI signs for hiking on foot, horseback, and by bicycle. These marked trails include the Sentiero dell’Amore and the Sorgenti del Marano. The Sentiero delle acque solfuree runs through Valle Sant’Anastasio in the Sassofeltrio area, is classified as CAI 060, and reaches an altitude of 800 meters above sea level. The classification and altitude describe different aspects of the same route: CAI 060 is its designation, while 800 meters is the altitude it reaches. Sant’Anastasio itself is also known for its sulfurous, alkaline spring.

A Park in Gesso and a Regional Dish

Gesso is home to a newer holistic park. If you plan to visit, check local operating details before your trip. One local culinary highlight is Fagioli con le cotiche, a rustic dish made with borlotti beans and pork rind. The ingredients are slowly cooked in a generous amount of seasoned tomato sauce and served on hot bruschetta.

Planning Your Stay

When planning your trip, keep in mind the difference between exploring the town’s history and following the marked trails in the surrounding area.
