Tavoleto lies on a mountain spur on the left side of the Foglia Valley, in a landscape characterized by dense woodland. The town combines a striking location with traces of several eras: from the visible remains of a Roman building to the history of the fortress and the fighting at the Gothic Line in 1944. There is also church art, a small chapel where Mass is celebrated every year, and a recurring September festival. If you choose Tavoleto as a destination for a hotel stay, you can plan your trip around the landscape, your interest in history, or a specific date.

Landscape and Viewpoints

Tavoleto’s location on a mountain spur and its dense woodland shape its landscape. The Big Bench in Tavoleto offers views of the coasts of Romagna and the Marche, as well as toward Monte Carpegna. This provides a different perspective from the wooded surroundings: the view extends to the coasts of two regions and toward a mountain. The tower of Palazzo Petrangolini also stands out in views of Tavoleto. It is often mistaken for a medieval residence, but was built only in later centuries.

Fortress History and Historical Traces

Tavoleto’s medieval castle was probably built by the Malatesta family in the early years of the 14th century. After Federico da Montefeltro definitively conquered Tavoleto in 1458, he had the castle destroyed and commissioned Francesco di Giorgio Martini to build a new fortress. It was certainly completed before 1474. The history therefore spans several building phases and the transition from the Malatesta castle to a newly commissioned fortress. The old town wall has a distinctive shape: it forms a large concave curve, with a small door opening in the middle. Visible remains of a Roman building have also been preserved in Tavoleto. Together, these traces span the period from Roman times to the fortress history of the 14th and 15th centuries.

Memorial Site of the Gothic Line

The Battle of Tavoleto on September 3 and 4, 1944, was one of the most dramatic engagements fought by Allied forces as they broke through the Gothic Line in the middle to upper Foglia area. Tavoleto is considered a memorial site of the Gothic Line. Near Monte S. Giovanni, the ruins of the castle “La Trappola” in Tavoleto have been preserved. Thus, alongside its medieval fortress history, the fighting of 1944 is another distinct historical layer to consider.

Churches and Art

The canvas paintings “S. Lorenzo Martire e Angeli,” “Vergine con Bambino e S. Antonio da Padova,” and “Madonna del Rosario con S. Domenico e S. Caterina” can be seen in the Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Tavoleto. The Chiesa di Sant’Ercolano in Ripamassana contains an original altarpiece depicting the Virgin and Child and an altar that is entirely inlaid. Relics were brought to the Chiesa di Sant’Ercolano and named in honor of San Gaudenzio.

A small chapel stands on the hilltop, with an altar dedicated to the Madonna Addolorata. A Santa Messa is celebrated there every year on the first Sunday in August. If you would like to include this date in your travel plans, check the details of the celebration in advance.

September Festival and When to Visit

The “Sagra della Polenta alla Carbonara” takes place on the third weekend of September. The 26th edition was held on September 20 and 21, 2025. The festival offers polenta alla carbonara, crostini, platters of cured meats, desserts, wine, and beer. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.

There are therefore two clearly distinct annual events to consider when planning your visit: the Santa Messa on the first Sunday in August and the Sagra on the third weekend of September. Cyclists also have a specific connection to the town: the “Pedalare fra Medioevo e Rinascimento” cycling tour starts in Tavoleto.
