In Campobasso, the Misteri tradition, archaeological collections, historic churches and green spaces offer different ways to explore the city. You can plan your stay around a cultural theme or combine your visits with gardens, public artworks and festivals throughout the year. Deciding which experiences you want to shape your stay is a helpful starting point when choosing a hotel.

The Misteri and archaeological collections

The Museo dei Misteri presents the mechanical “Ingegni” created by Paolo Saverio di Zinno. In the main room, the Sala degli Ingegni “Cosmo Teberino”, you can view thirteen “naked” machines and their structural and artistic features. The museum comprises two exhibition rooms and a screening room; seeing the constructions up close adds a more immediate sense of their design to your knowledge of the Misteri.

The Misteri also have a special place in the festival calendar: on Corpus Christi Sunday, 13 processional machines are carried on the shoulders of bearers through the streets of Campobasso. Sculptor Paolo Saverio Di Zinno designed and created them in the mid-18th century. If you want to plan your trip around this date, check the exact event schedule in advance.

Founded in 1881, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale has been housed in Palazzo Mazzarotta since 1995 and is open to visitors. Its collection spans from prehistory to the Middle Ages, with a clear focus on Samnite finds. Archaeological materials come, among other places, from Campomarino, Guglionesi, Larino, Sepino, Campochiaro and Castello Monforte. It is worth checking the museum’s current visitor information before your visit.

Churches, art and architectural history

The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate originated in 1572 as an oratory that stood outside the city walls at the time: the Congrega delle Maestranze converted it into a church. Inside, the church preserves works by Francesco Guarino da Solofra, Scipione Cecere, Paolo Saverio Di Zinno, Amedeo Trivisonno and Leo Paglione. The Chiesa di San Giorgio, built in the 14th century, is decorated with frescoes depicting the Church Fathers, Evangelists and scenes from Genesis.

The Teatro Savoia was built between 1923 and 1925. Frescoes by Arnaldo De Lisio from 1925 decorate the entrance area, the foyer and the ceiling above the auditorium. The Convitto Nazionale Mario Pagano includes an Aula Magna with paintings by Romeo Musa, as well as an oratory with three large frescoes by Amedeo Trivisonno. Check visitor access in advance if you would like to see the interiors.

Gardens and green spaces

Villa De Capoa combines the characteristics of a botanical garden with those of an urban villa. Its park is home to, among other trees, towering sequoias, imposing Lebanese cedars, cypresses, red spruces and lime trees. A different kind of garden can be found at the Convitto Nazionale Mario Pagano: laid out at the end of the 19th century, it features rare species such as the giant sequoia, Ginkgo biloba and the Lebanon cedar.

Parco Eduardo De Filippo is the most significant green space in the San Giovanni district. Its varied planting is complemented by a play area, sports facilities and works of contemporary art. Campobasso thus offers a range of green spaces alongside museums and architecture: from a garden with botanical features and rare tree species to a park that also incorporates sport and art.

Festivals, street art and local cuisine

In summer, Parco Eduardo De Filippo hosts the Festival Nazionale del Teatro Popolare e della Tradizione; check the event dates before your trip. Another annual procession is dedicated to the highly venerated statue of the Virgin Mary at the Santuario di Santa Maria del Monte, which is carried on 31 May. If you are planning a trip around a festival, you can use Corpus Christi Sunday, the fixed date in May or the summer festival as different points of reference.

Street art also adds to the city’s cultural attractions: the San Giovanni dei Gelsi district has been transformed into an open-air street art museum. A street art trail dedicated to the traditional Misteri festival has also been set up there. L’Abatina, a particularly spicy De.Co. product, adds a culinary touch. The sausage is placed under a press after being stuffed, which gives it its flat shape when served.

Getting there and planning your hotel stay

Campobasso railway station has a bus stop, bicycle parking, cycle paths, parking for cars and motorcycles, and charging stations for electric vehicles. The station has three tracks for passenger services. If you would like to use the assistance service, check its current status before travelling.

To plan your trip, you can first decide whether museums and archaeological finds, churches and art, green spaces or an event date should shape your stay. Then determine which visits and dates matter for your trip, and check the relevant visitor information where necessary. This will help you tailor your hotel search to your interests and the timeframe of your stay.
