Caldaro on the Wine Road can be explored through three distinct themes: the village character shaped by the Überetsch style, Lake Caldaro and trails through the wine-growing landscape. The trails offer different experiences, so you can first decide which of these aspects of Caldaro matters most for your travel plans.

Village character and architectural heritage

The village character of Caldaro is shaped by the Überetsch style, which is reminiscent of Tuscan architecture. Alongside the lake and wine-growing landscape, architecture offers another way to discover the area. The comparison with Tuscany brings the style to life: it refers to a form of architecture that gives the village its character. If you would like to include architectural heritage in your plans alongside nature and wine, this aspect adds another option when choosing how to spend your days.

Walks by Lake Caldaro

Lake Caldaro is South Tyrol’s largest natural body of water. The lakeside trail makes it possible to take a long walk around the lake and explore its different features. The nature trail runs for around 7.5 km through the biotope and around Lake Caldaro, and includes 14 information panels. White storks, cormorants, herons and native birds are mentioned in connection with the trail.

The trail descriptions focus on different things: the lakeside trail is all about the circuit around the lake, while the nature trail also takes in the biotope and information panels. This lets you choose between a long walk by the lake and a trail with information about nature.

Trails through the wine-growing landscape

The Kalterer wein.weg (Caldaro Wine Trail) focuses on the wine-growing landscape and follows a figure-eight route with a crossing point in the village centre. From there, it runs along an existing circular hiking trail to Lake Caldaro or in the other direction to Oberplanitzing, passing vineyards and wine estates. This gives you two directions to choose from: towards the lake or towards Oberplanitzing. The village centre remains the shared crossing point of the loop. For planning your day, this is a different kind of route from the lakeside trail: here, vineyards and wine estates are part of the route. If you are interested in winegrowing and the landscape, you can use the two directions as a guide when choosing your route.

Cycling route and connection to the lake

The Bolzano–Lake Caldaro cycle path runs from Bolzano to the shores of Lake Caldaro. It therefore offers a different route from the trails around the lake, through the biotope or along the Kalterer wein.weg. The route is an option for your plans if you would like to include a cycle route connecting Bolzano and the lakeshore.

Bus line 130 takes you from Caldaro to the centre of the Lake Caldaro area in about five minutes. If you would like to use this connection for your trip, it may be worth checking the current timetable before you set off.
