Petersberg: Hiking, Culture and Golf
Accommodation in Petersberg
Monte San Pietro, known as Petersberg in German, lies at an altitude of about 1,380 metres on the sunny high plateau of the Reggelberg. If you are looking for a hotel in Petersberg, the area’s varied attractions can help you plan your trip: you can choose to focus on an easy family hike to farmsteads, alpine trails, cultural history or golf, according to your interests.
Cultural history in Petersberg
The parish church dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Margaret preserves a Romanesque tower with two rows of three-part round-arched windows, as well as part of the nave walls. These surviving elements give the church a distinctive architectural profile.
The pilgrimage site of Maria Weissenstein near Petersberg brings together religious tradition and history. According to the traditional account, following a Marian apparition to the hermit Leonhard Weissensteiner in 1553, his small chapel was expanded into a pilgrimage site. Petersberg thus brings together different aspects of cultural history: the Romanesque elements of the parish church and the traditional story of Maria Weissenstein’s origins.
Hiking to farmsteads and alpine pastures
The family hike to the farmsteads of Petersberg/Monte San Pietro starts in the village centre. It follows trails 6A and 1 through meadows, passes Häusler Hof, Tschengg Hof and Oberrain, and returns to the village centre. The easy hike is 4.1 kilometres long, with an activity time of 1 hour and 5 minutes. Route details may be updated seasonally, so check them before your hike. The starting point is served by the Monte S. San Pietro, Hotel Peter bus stop. As bus connections and timetables may change, check the timetable before travelling.
Another hike starts in Monte San Pietro and leads through meadows and open woodland to the Schönrast, Schmieder and Lahner alpine pastures. The European long-distance path E5 runs along part of the route through alpine pastures to Schönrast Alm; from there, you can see Latemar and Catinaccio. The Gorzsteig trail descends to Lahner Alm, where you can take a break and enjoy typical local dishes. The hikes therefore offer different experiences: the farmstead loop passes through meadows and named farmsteads, while the other route links alpine pasture destinations and mountain pastures.
Petersberger Leger Alm and golf course
Petersberger Leger Alm lies at an altitude of 1,530 metres between the pilgrimage site of Maria Weissenstein, the Bletterbach Gorge and WeiĂźhorn. It can be reached from the Maria Weissenstein car park in 35 to 40 minutes, including with a pushchair. On the family hike from Pietralba to Malga Monte San Pietro, forest road no. 2 leads from the car park to Petersberger Leger Alm and back along the same route; the trail is easy and suitable for families. The times refer to different planning considerations: the activity time for the farmstead loop and the walk from the car park to the alpine pasture.
Petersberger Leger Alm serves typical South Tyrolean dishes as well as homemade cakes and desserts; the menu may vary seasonally. Check the current selection before planning a stop. The Gorzsteig trail also leads to Lahner Alm, where typical local dishes can round off a break; if you plan to stop there, it is also worth checking the current menu.
Petersberg Golf Club offers an 18-hole course at an altitude of about 1,250 metres. Its features include challenging changes in elevation and tricky, narrow fairways. Small groves, old trees and picturesque ponds blend into the surrounding mountain landscape. There are clear differences to consider when choosing between hiking and cultural attractions or golf: the hikes lead to farmsteads and alpine pastures, while the golf course offers its own sporting challenge with its elevation changes and fairways.
