Abtei: Discover Ladin Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Abtei
Abtei is an interesting destination for travelers who do not want to reduce Ladin heritage and nature to a single theme. In Badia, cultural points of interest range from the “viles,” the Ladin farmsteads, to a pilgrimage site and the parish church. Nature trails, a natural monument, and a 300-meter-long ski slope offer other highlights.
Ladin Farmsteads, Pilgrimage, and Architectural History
Badia’s well-preserved Ladin farmsteads are called “viles” in Ladin. Archaeological finds at Sotciastel near Badia suggest that the area was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age. The Rüdeferia Mill is also located in the municipality of Badia and is protected as an architectural monument. The area’s history thus brings together named farmsteads, traces of early settlement, and protected buildings as distinct points of interest.
Oies is a popular pilgrimage site; its main attraction is the birthplace of the missionary Josef Freinademetz. The Oies farmstead also has an artistic connection: its cellar was converted into a chapel and decorated with works by the artists Kollreider from Lienz and Lois Irsara from Badia. The chapel thus combines the conversion of a farm cellar with works by two named artists.
The parish church of Badia is the Church of St. James and St. Leonard. It was first mentioned in a document dating from the 14th century. Two distinct stylistic features meet at the church: a Gothic bell tower and a Rococo-style interior. Visitors interested in architectural history can take in both its early written mention and its architectural design.
Nature Trails and Landscapes
On the Sentiero dei larici, the trail route and nature education go hand in hand. The trail connects the RĂĽdeferia and RĂĽ farmsteads above San Cassiano in the municipality of Badia and forms part of the boundary of the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park. As a nature education trail, it features interactive stations and is particularly suitable for families with children.
The circular hike from Badia through the Armentara meadows offers a different experience: it leads through flower-filled alpine meadows and unspoiled nature. In contrast, the Sentiero dei larici connects two specifically named farmsteads and features interactive stations; the circular route and meadow landscape define the character of the Armentara hike. The mountain lake Lech Dlá Lé adds another nature attraction as a designated natural monument.
Activities and Events
The “Baby La Crusc” ski slope is particularly suitable for beginners; it is 300 meters long. First-time skiers will find a clearly identified slope of a manageable length. At SummerPark La Crusc, visitors can pan for gold and visit a dragon’s cave, among other activities. Operating information varies by season, so check it for your planned visit date.
A recurring event in the annual calendar is the Rait de San Linert, a ride in honor of Saint Leonard. It takes place in Badia on the second Sunday in November. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year. For information, tips, and news about Badia and Alta Badia, the Badia Tourist Office is located in the town center.
