Rasen-Antholz offers several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: a nature park and mountain lake, circular trails and leisure activities, mountain biking, and the history of buildings and local rule. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide which of these interests you want to shape your stay. The specific places and activities offer various points of reference to help you decide.

Nature Park, Lake and Circular Trails

The Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park also extends into the municipality of Rasen-Antholz. Thirty-eight percent of the municipality’s 12,092 hectares lie within the nature park. This makes the protected area an important part of the municipality, though it does not cover the entire area.

One clearly named point of reference is Lake Antholz. It covers 44 hectares, is up to 38 metres deep and is South Tyrol’s third-largest mountain lake. The lakeside circular trail starts at the lake. If you want to plan your stay around this body of water, you can include the circular trail as a nature-focused activity in your plans.

The trails through the Rasner Möser biotope offer a different landscape to explore: two circular trails lead through the wetland. The lake and the biotope thus offer different starting points for excursions. The focus at the lake is a mountain body of water, while at Rasner Möser it is the route through a biotope.

Leisure Activities and Mountain Biking

The Wasserwaldile adventure area combines play, movement and water-based activities. Its features include a water course, a wobbly bridge, balancing trails and stepping stones. There is also the ball water run, “Anton’s Journey Through the Valley of Water Games.” The area brings together various ways to play and move around in the water.

There is also a classic 12-hole minigolf course at the Niederrasen leisure park. Wasserwaldile and minigolf offer different experiences: the former focuses on water and movement, while the latter is a game played on a course with a set number of holes. When planning, you can therefore choose between different leisure activities rather than treating them as similar offerings.

The Antholz Niedertal Mountain Bike Area offers three downhill routes with different levels of difficulty. The area also has a pump track for children. These are two different types of cycling activities: the routes are differentiated by difficulty, while the pump track is specifically described as an activity for children. As the trail configuration may change, it is a good idea to check the latest information before setting out.

Castle Ruins and a Historic Stone Bridge

The Neurasen and Altrasen castle ruins represent different aspects of the area’s history. Neurasen was built around 1200 by the Lords of Rasen and was already in ruins by around 1680. The two dates show how much time passed between its construction and the documented status of the castle as a ruin.

A different historical role is recorded for Altrasen: in the 13th century, the castle held high jurisdiction and belonged to the Görz domain in the Puster Valley. The history of the two castle ruins therefore cannot be reduced to a single shared function. Neurasen is associated with its construction date and early status as a ruin, while Altrasen is associated with jurisdiction and its place within a domain.

The historic stone bridge marks another period in time. It dates from 1847, was restored in 2011 according to the original plans, and has been preserved as a document of modern road-building craftsmanship. Compared with the castle ruins, the focus here is on more recent building history: a 19th-century stone bridge and its later restoration. Nature, leisure, cycling and historic buildings thus offer different perspectives on Rasen-Antholz, without requiring a fixed itinerary.

Getting to the Lakeside Circular Trail

Bus route 431 connects Olang-Antholz railway station with Lake Antholz, the starting point of the lakeside circular trail. If the lake is part of your plans, you can take this connection into account when travelling there. Check the current timetable for the route before setting off. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider your planned travel arrangements alongside your interests in nature and culture.
