Deutschnofen: Hiking, Culture and Bike Park
Accommodation in Deutschnofen
Deutschnofen can be explored through a range of interests: a panoramic hike with a small church as its destination, sacred architecture and art history, mountain biking, and a farmers’ market featuring regional produce. These themes offer different focuses when planning your trip: spending time outdoors, learning about buildings and art, or discovering regional products. The following places and activities provide specific points of reference to help you choose.
Hiking and Chapels
The panoramic hike starts in the center of Nova Ponente and leads across open fields with beautiful views to the small Church of St. Helena. The church impresses with its rich fresco decoration, a major work of the Bolzano School of Painting from around 1400. Its basic structure is Romanesque and probably dates back to the 12th century. The route thus combines open landscapes with a clearly defined art-historical destination.
The Chapel of Sant’Agata stands on an isolated hill surrounded by forest, apart from the rest of the village. You can reach it on foot from the “Nova Ponente, Chiesa” bus stop via Via Castello Thurn, Trail No. 5 and Trail A in about 45 minutes. In contrast, the panoramic hike starts in the center of Nova Ponente; the route to Sant’Agata starts at the named bus stop.
Architecture and Art History
The Nova Ponente Territory Museum is housed in a Romanesque tower dating from the 13th century. The parish church of Nova Ponente, by contrast, is a Gothic building from the 15th century, with an impressive sandstone façade. It was completed in 1498 and consecrated on September 16 of the same year. Panels from the parish church of Nova Ponente formed part of a famous altarpiece created around 1420 for the parish church of Bolzano by the Austrian master Hans von Judenburg. Romanesque and Gothic refer to different architectural styles, so comparing the tower and church also offers an architectural point of reference. The dates refer to different things: 1498 marks the completion and consecration of the parish church of Nova Ponente, while around 1420 is the date when the altarpiece created for Bolzano was made.
Mountain Biking and Adventure Trail
The Nova Ponente Bike Park covers 3,500 m² and offers mountain biking trails of varying difficulty, jumps, obstacles and skills courses. The “Kirchsteig” adventure trail has a different focus: it provides a fun way to learn about flora and fauna as well as agriculture and forestry. Its stations include a listening island, a telescope, a wildlife memory game and a watermill wheel. When planning your activities, you can choose between the mountain biking facilities and a themed trail with learning stations.
