San Michele: Churches, Culture and History
Accommodation in San Michele
For a trip to San Michele, sacred architectural history, the townscape and nature can be explored as distinct themes. The buildings reflect different periods and styles; there is also a permanent archaeological exhibition, trails and seasonal events. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish enduring cultural attractions from events with a changing annual program.
Churches, Townscape and Cultural History
The former parish church of St. Michael was first mentioned in a document in 1237. It has a Romanesque core structure and Gothic elements dating from a renovation in the early 16th century. The church and tower are protected historic monuments.
The Church of St. Joseph, also known as the Dominican Church, was built between 1883 and 1886. Construction of the Gleif Church began in 1716, and it marks the end of the Appiano Passion Path. For the parish church, 1237 is the date of its first documented mention; the dates for the other two churches refer to when they were built.
Many old houses in the center of San Michele are built in the Überetsch style and adorned with bay windows, gables, double-arched windows and turrets. At the Lanserhaus in San Michele Appiano, a permanent archaeological exhibition traces Eppan’s settlement history from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. The cultural history on display thus ranges from individual architectural features to a long history of settlement.
Natural Phenomena and Trails
The Ice Holes lie at an elevation of about 500 meters between the municipalities of Eppan and Kaltern, at the foot of Gandberg. The hollow is 200 meters long and 50 meters wide. The physical principle of the wind tunnel explains this unusual climatic phenomenon: the temperature of the cold air in the hollow is between 0 and 9 degrees Celsius.
The path to the Ice Holes passes through forests and vineyards and by a medieval castle. Another natural attraction, the 100-hectare Montiggler Wald nature reserve, with several bathing lakes, is near the center of San Michele. The two natural destinations are in different locations: the Ice Holes lie between Eppan and Kaltern, while Montiggler Wald is near the town center.
Tours and Seasonal Events
The challenging route from San Michele to Perdonig and Gaid is popular with cyclists and mountain bikers. The tour along the Edith Stein Trail starts at the parish church of St. Michael, takes about four hours and includes an ascent of 470 meters. The duration and elevation gain may vary depending on the route.
The recurring “Long Wednesdays” turn the center of St. Michael into a pedestrian-friendly promenade every Wednesday evening in July and August, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with shops, restaurants, music and culinary offerings. Exact dates and times vary from year to year; check them for your travel dates. Unlike this seasonal event, the archaeological exhibition is permanent.
A farmers’ market is held weekly in the central town hall square. Eppan Advent’s Christmas market in San Michele features mulled wine, handmade treasures and atmospheric music.
