Santo Stefano: Hiking at Kronplatz
Accommodation in Santo Stefano
Santo Stefano lies at the foot of the Kronplatz ski area. The houses in the village are scattered across meadows between the Hurtmüllermoos biotope and a mountain farm on the slope of Kronplatz. Santo Stefano is also on the road to the valley station of the Kronplatz lifts. This means Kronplatz is part of the landscape in several ways: as a ski area at the foot of the village, as part of the settlement landscape, and as a landmark along the road to the valley station.
Hiking between Kronplatz and Haidenberg
The hike leads from the summit of Kronplatz via Stefansdorf to Reischach, following trails 8, 4 and 7. It passes the first farms in Santo Stefano/Stefansdorf and the Weliserhof farm before continuing to Reischach. Trail numbers and named waypoints provide specific guidance along this route.
The Haidenberg hiking trail starts at the parking lot near the Kneipp facility in Stefansdorf/Santo Stefano. Trail 4 leads to the Haidenberg inn at an altitude of 1,280 meters in about an hour. The duration is approximate; together with the destination’s elevation, it provides a reference for both timing and location. You can use this estimated duration to plan your day, while the trail numbers and waypoints help you follow the hike to Reischach.
Numerous hiking trails and mountain biking routes run through the area around Santo Stefano, offering ways to explore Kronplatz. Hiking and mountain biking are two different ways to include the mountain in your travel plans. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
Winter trails, tobogganing and ice skating
A winter trail leads through snow-covered scenery from Stefansdorf to Haidenberg. The trail offers views over the Brunico basin, the Ahrntal Valley, the Zillertal Alps and the Rieserferner Group. Visibility depends on the weather. The view takes in both valleys and mountain ranges.
In winter, Haidenberg is a destination for tobogganing enthusiasts. You can stop at the hut before heading down one of the toboggan runs in the Puster Valley. Stefansdorf/Santo Stefano also has a small ice rink. This means you can choose from different seasonal activities: a winter trail, tobogganing with the option of stopping at the hut, and ice skating. Snow and trail conditions can change, so check them before your winter outings.
Church in the town center
The Church of Saints Stephen and Vitus stands in the center of Santo Stefano. It contains frescoes dating from around 1500, probably attributed to Simon von Taisten. As a local landmark, the centrally located church adds a historical note to Santo Stefano’s landscape and trail connections.
