Stulles: Hiking Trails, Waterfalls and Village History
Accommodation in Stulles
When planning a stay in Stulles, you can choose excursions based on their character: hikes lead to Stuller Hochwart or across sunny slopes and through forests, while waterfalls, climbing routes and the parish church of St. Joseph offer other points of interest. Getting there and the time of year also play a role in planning your day.
Hiking Tours and Trail Features
The tour to Stuller Hochwart starts at the Stuller Mahder meadows, continues via Egger-Grub-Alm and then heads on to Hochalm. The final ten vertical metres of the ascent are almost vertical and equipped with a fixed steel cable. This steep final section is a specific feature to consider when deciding whether to take the tour.
The Sonnenrundweg starts at the car park by the church and leads across sunny slopes and through secluded forests. A winter hike from Stulles to Egger-Grub-Alm follows the wide farm track 14B or forest trail 14; the return journey to Stulles follows the same route. In heavy snowfall, the winter hike should stay on farm track 14B. Forest trail 14 is very steep and usually not cleared of snow in winter.
Another route is trail no. 10a: it descends north of Stulles to the main village of Moos and also serves as the descent route from the Stuller Wasserfall via ferrata.
Stuller Waterfalls and Climbing Routes
The Stuller Waterfalls lie below Stulles. The water plunges down in two cascades, first 112 metres and then 230 metres. The waterfalls can be seen from Breiteben, the Timmelsjoch road and the Passerschluchtweg trail. The height of the cascades and the viewpoints listed are among the distinctive features of this natural attraction.
The Stuller Wasserfall via ferrata is a steep, exposed route close to the waterfall and has a moderate difficulty rating. There is a very difficult variant in the middle section, which can be bypassed. From Stulles, the final section of the via ferrata can be reached via a short footpath. The Stuls climbing garden has 65 climbing routes, adding another distinct destination for climbing enthusiasts.
Getting There and Starting Points
Stulles can be reached from Moos several times a day by public bus. The starting point for the Stuller Waterfalls can be reached in two stages: first, take line 240 from Meran to Moos, then line 241 from Moos to Stulles. Check the current timetable for your specific journey. For the tour to Stuller Hochwart, parking is available at the car park by the church; the Sonnenrundweg also starts there.
Church and Cheesemaking
The parish church of St. Joseph in Stulles is Baroque. It is the only church in Hinterpasseier with an onion dome and a shingle roof. Its bells are also part of the village’s history: the original bells of the parish church survived the First World War undamaged because Stulles was difficult to reach due to its remote location. The church’s architectural style and the history of its bells offer two different points of interest for a visit.
On request, Wegerhof Dairy offers guided farm tours in German or Italian. The farm makes cheese using traditional methods from pasture milk produced without silage and ages it in its own cellar. If you are interested in local cheesemaking, you can include the farm tour and cheese production as separate activities in your travel plans.
