Franzensfeste combines a striking historic site with exhibitions on fortress construction, bunkers and the Brenner Base Tunnel. Cycle routes and the landscape of the narrow valley passage can also shape a stay. If you are planning a trip, it helps to choose your focus first: would you like to concentrate mainly on the fortress, are you interested in the exhibitions, or would you like to include cycling routes?

The Fortress and a Visit to Forte Alto

The Franzensfeste Fortress covers 65,000 square metres of building area and is considered the largest historic site in all of South Tyrol. Its size makes it a defining landmark of the region. In the narrow valley passage before Brixen/Bressanone, the fortress and the green-shimmering reservoir together shape the landscape.

When planning your visit, it is important to note the access conditions for Forte Alto: this part of the fortress can only be visited as part of a guided tour. The climb is via an underground staircase with 452 steps. As tour arrangements may change, check the latest information about guided tours in advance.

Exhibitions on Tunnel Construction, the Fortress and Gold

The BBT INFOPOINT is a permanent exhibition about the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel. It is housed in the historic rooms of the fortress and covers almost 200 square metres. It includes interactive scanner journeys into the tunnel and a multimedia experience of the tunnel construction process. The focus here is on modern tunnel construction, while other exhibitions explore historical subjects.

The fortress’s permanent exhibition tells the story of the fortified structure and the gold of the Italian National Bank, which was stored there during the Second World War. The exhibition “La Cattedrale nel deserto” explores the design and construction of the fortress, as well as the history of transporting and storing gold in Franzensfeste. These subjects offer different perspectives, from the creation of the structure to the history of the gold.

“Bunkerizzato” and Bunker No. 3

“Bunkerizzato. Bunker in Alto Adige” focuses on the Alpine Wall, which was built in the 1930s and 1940s. Five of the more than 300 bunkers in South Tyrol are located in Franzensfeste. The exhibition includes a faithful replica of Bunker No. 3, as well as artefacts, photographs, texts, infographics, documents and videos.

A notable exhibit is a rocket developed in 1950: it is over eight metres long, weighs two tonnes and could be launched up to 48 kilometres. It could carry conventional, chemical or nuclear warheads. There is also a puzzle to solve as you make your way through the exhibition: the door to the final exhibition room can only be opened with a code that visitors work out by solving the puzzle.

Bunker No. 3 lies in a forest near the Franzensfeste Fortress. Its underground system extends for 290 metres and spans an elevation difference of almost 26 metres within the natural rock. These figures for length and elevation give the structure a different scale from the sprawling fortress: here, the focus is on an underground system within the rock.

Cycle Routes and Getting to the Fortress

For cyclists, the Brenner–Bolzano cycle route offers two distance options from Franzensfeste: 45 kilometres in the direction of the Brenner and 43 kilometres in the direction of Bolzano. The Puster Valley Cycle Path runs from San Candido via Brunico to Fortezza and is one of the two cycle routes that pass in front of the Franzensfeste Fortress. This gives you different route options: a route with distances stated for both directions and a cycle path that passes in front of the fortress.

The fortress is about a 20-minute walk from Franzensfeste railway station. There is a bus stop right at the main entrance. The “Festung” stop between Aicha and Franzensfeste, on the other hand, is served only on request. Bear this difference in mind when planning your journey, and check the details for the relevant connection if needed.
