Those choosing Avio as a destination will find several different starting points for planning their trip: medieval architecture and art, trails on Monte Baldo, and a winemaking tradition associated with Enantio. First, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Castle History and Art in Avio

Castello di Avio comprises an 11th-century keep, five towers, a baronial palace and walls dating from the 13th century. Its frescoes also offer a range of different subjects: in the Sala delle Guardie, a 14th-century fresco cycle depicting battle scenes has been preserved. The Camera di Amore is also decorated with 14th-century frescoes. They depict a medieval world of ladies and knights and explore courtly love and the art of war. Together, the building and its imagery offer different insights into the history of the complex.

The Antica Pieve di Avio, a Romanesque church at the foot of Monte Baldo, offers another facet of art history. Its Venetian-school frescoes date from the late 13th century. They depict Christ's entry into Jerusalem and the baptism of Jesus. Their connection to two biblical scenes makes the wall paintings interesting even for travellers who are less interested in military subjects than in religious art.

A sword from the Late Bronze Age is on display at the Antiquarium di Avio. It was found in 2021 near the ridge of Monte Baldo, at Malga Acquenere in the municipality of Avio, and has been dated to around 1350–1000 BC. The Antiquarium comunale is located in Avio's historic centre, in Casa del Vicario. These are two specific points of reference: an archaeological collection and a location in the historic centre.

Hikes and Trails on Monte Baldo

The Giro delle Malghe comprises three circular hiking trails on Monte Baldo in the municipality of Avio. Short sections also pass through the neighbouring province of Verona. Along the way, the trails pass through centuries-old beech forests and grazed meadows; the described sights include local mountain huts and bivouacs. Historic boundary stones dating from 1754 are also located along the routes. The landscape and traces of former boundaries offer different perspectives along the circular trails.

Another trail section forms part of the Perimetro del Trentino from Avio to Torbole. Section 11 follows an old mule track into the valley crossed by the Aviana stream. If you are considering a route with a named section rather than a circular hike, you can make this trail a focus of your travel plans.

The Ferrata Gerardo Sega near Avio offers a different kind of outing, with a total elevation difference of around 900 metres and an overall duration of approximately six hours; it is rated difficult. Check the route details and difficulty in light of current mountain conditions before planning your trip. This information helps distinguish the via ferrata from the circular hikes described above, without implying that they have the same level of difficulty.

The 73.6-kilometre Mori–Avio–San Valentino circular route also offers a different scale of trail. From Avio, it runs through the Valle dei Molini towards San Valentino. Its length and described route provide specific points of reference if you are comparing it with shorter trails on Monte Baldo.

Wine, Tastings and Events

Avio is known for producing Enantio, an indigenous wine from Vallagarina with a history of more than a century. The Uva e dintorni festival programme includes tastings of local products along a food trail. There are also markets, medieval encampments, and re-enactments of historic games, battles and crafts. The specific programme may vary from one edition to another.

The “Città del Vino” Palio features four competitions involving barrels and skittles, as well as grape-stomping until a barrel is filled. This event format may also vary from one edition to another. When planning, it is therefore worth checking the dates and programme for the relevant edition rather than assuming that specific activities will be included on every visit.

At Azienda Agricola Vallarom, a tasting includes four still wines served by the glass, local products, the estate's own honey and bread. Guided tours of the winery and surrounding countryside are also offered, with three still wines served by the glass and bread. The two experiences described differ both in the number of wines and in their setting and accompanying products.

A Practical Point of Reference for Cyclists

Bici Grill Ruota Libera is located on the Adige Cycle Path at the foot of Castello di Avio. It has power outlets for charging e-bikes and a bicycle repair workshop. When choosing your destination, these practical facilities may be worth considering alongside cultural and hiking attractions.
