Calceranica Al Lago between the lake and mining history
Accommodation in Calceranica Al Lago
Between the slope, stream and lake
Calceranica al Lago lies on the alluvial fan of the Torrente Mandola, between the southeastern shore of Lake Caldonazzo and the slope of Monte Somo. The stream divides the settlement before flowing into the lake. At the same time, the town stretches from the hill down to Lake Caldonazzo. The slope, watercourse and lake provide different points of reference in the landscape and shape the town’s setting.
By the lake, there are green areas along the shore, campsites, beaches and leisure facilities. This means the town’s character extends from the hillside to the lakeshore. When choosing a destination, you can therefore explore several different themes: the lakeside landscape, the setting along a stream, and the history reflected in the churches and mining industry.
Churches and their history
The Chiesa dell'Assunta is a Gothic-Renaissance building. An inscription on the main portal states that the church was built before 1208 and reconsecrated in 1537. The church houses an almost intact organ made in 1805 by the Venetian organ builder Antonio Callido. It is considered the only surviving organ by this builder in Trentino. The architecture, inscription and instrument connect different historical points of reference.
The Chiesa di Sant'Ermete is considered the oldest church in the Valsugana. It stands in the historic centre on a rocky outcrop where an altar dedicated to the goddess Diana was found. While the Assunta is associated with its architecture and organ, Sant'Ermete also represents an archaeological find at the site of the church. Those interested in the town’s history can thus explore two different subjects: architectural and organ history, and the more ancient religious and archaeological past.
Mining history and getting around
The Museo della Miniera displays miners’ equipment and accessories, documents, photographs and maps. There are also drilling, ventilation and transport machines. Educational panels provide information about the area’s local geology and mineralisation. The museum documents the intensive mining activity of the Calceranica community from 1800 to the second half of the 20th century. The exhibits and panels offer different perspectives, covering both work equipment and technical processes as well as the area’s geological characteristics.
A historical photograph from 1935 to 1941 shows a train in the Galleria Leyla transporting mined minerals. The scene highlights transport as part of the local mining history. The Parco Minerario – Miniera is located on Via della Miniera and can be reached from the town centre.
Cycling routes and practical planning
The Valsugana cycling route passes through Calceranica al Lago. A regional description from the first quarter of 2018 characterises it as suitable for everyone and notes that it has no significant climbs, includes long, straight sections and has few changes of direction. Check current conditions before setting out.
The Sentiero della Miniera – Percorso Verde circular route is currently closed. It starts at the Museo della Miniera and leads to mining and historical sites in Calceranica and Bosentino. It follows an ancient Roman road, passes through forests and runs alongside watercourses; the return route follows the Sentiero del Minatore. Before making plans for a later visit, check whether it is still closed. This allows you to understand the route as described while keeping its current closure status in mind.
