The highlights vary depending on the season and type of stay. Travel dates and planned activities are therefore good starting points when choosing.

Val Duron: Landscapes and Trails

Campitello lies at the entrance to Val Duron. The valley is named after the Rio Duron, which flows through the village. Broad meadows and flower-filled areas open up in Val Duron, with huts dotted between them. The first section of the valley from Campitello is closed to motorized traffic. Val Duron is a starting point for hikes towards Passo Duron.

A route from Campitello through the hamlet of Pian to Val Duron passes through a valley between the Catinaccio, Sassolungo and Sassopiatto mountain groups. A hiking map in its 2024 edition also lists a route that starts and ends in Campitello: via Col Rodella, the Friedrich August Trail, Passo Duron and Val Duron, back to Campitello. When planning this circular route, bear in mind that mountain conditions change with the seasons.

Hikes with Different Highlights

The Friedrich August Trail was inaugurated on 30 July 1911 and is dedicated to King Frederick Augustus III of Saxony. Trail no. 557 connects Sella Pass with the former Seiseralpe Hut via Sela Rodela. The inauguration and dedication mark the Friedrich August Trail; trail no. 557 runs from Sella Pass via Sela Rodela to the former Seiseralpe Hut. Check conditions on the route before setting out.

A specific section is also described for families with children: the Friedrich August Trail as far as Rifugio Sandro Pertini is suitable for them and can be walked with a baby carrier or a child-carrier backpack, but not with a stroller. If you are traveling with children, this distinction can help when choosing a hike. You should still check conditions before setting out.

Col Rodella and Winter Sports

The cable car from Campitello goes up to Col Rodella at an altitude of 2,480 meters. The Belvedere–Col Rodella ski area can be accessed via lifts in the town centers of Campitello and Canazei; lift services are seasonal. This makes it possible to distinguish between two different plans: taking the cable car up to Col Rodella or accessing the ski area via the lifts. Operating hours and schedules may vary, so it is worth checking the latest information for your planned travel dates.

Activities in Ischia

In the hamlet of Ischia, near the Col Rodella cable car station, is the modern ADEL sport climbing center. It is certified to host international competitions. Opening hours and admission details may change; check the latest information if you are planning a visit.

The Centro sportivo Ischia offers facilities and equipment for tennis, soccer, five-a-side soccer, beach volleyball, basketball, bocce, roller skating and mini golf. The Ischia area also has an adventure park among the trees, with a high ropes crossing over the Avisio River. Availability and booking requirements for the sports facilities may vary. If a particular activity is important to your trip, check these details in advance.

Local History and Events

Among the historic sites is L Stont – Il Casino di Bersaglio, a shooting range built in 1905 that remained in operation until the outbreak of the First World War. The “L carnascèr” carnival is one of Campitello’s major events and a local tradition. Dates and programs may vary from year to year.

Pian, a hamlet of Campitello, is a cluster of historic hay barns. It is considered an old Ladin shepherd settlement and is now protected for environmental and urban-planning reasons. This local history adds another perspective on the surroundings of Val Duron: alongside trails and mountain groups, historic buildings and local traditions also shape the stay.

If you are looking for a hotel, first consider which of these themes you want your stay to focus on: hikes, lifts, sports facilities or local culture. Your travel dates matter, as lift services are seasonal, event dates may change and mountain conditions can affect access to trails.
