Discover Capriana: Nature Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Capriana
Capriana can be explored through two main themes: nature trails and cultural history. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the character of each destination. The Sentiero Botanico Naturalistico combines changing landscapes with information about nature; other routes lead to the Prati del Toro and Lago Bianco, or into the Avisio river landscape. The cultural sites offer a different focus: the Mulino della Meneghina features a reconstructed mill workshop, while the Casa natale di M. Domenica Lazzeri preserves keepsakes, books, and paintings.
Nature Trails and Landscapes
The Sentiero Botanico Naturalistico in Capriana passes through fields, forests, scree slopes, and species-rich meadows with medicinal plants. It connects Grauno and Capriana and provides information about the surrounding natural environment. The trail is easy and signposted; along the route, information boards offer explanations about nature. Changing landscapes and learning go hand in hand here: the route draws attention to different habitats and plant life.
On the European long-distance path E5, you can travel from Capriana via the Prati del Toro to Lago Bianco, at an elevation of 1,675 metres. The Prati del Toro is a destination along the route; Lago Bianco adds an elevation to the route description. Compared with the Sentiero Botanico, the focus here is on the route and its destinations, while the nature information boards and varied landscapes define the character of the latter.
The Masi custodi dell'Avisio route leads to a floodplain on the Avisio and a wooded bend in the river where traces of birds, mammals, and insects can be found. Parco Naturale del Monte Corno protects several biotopes with rare species and offers numerous easy-to-walk, well-signposted trails. These nature destinations offer different highlights: Masi custodi dell'Avisio leads into a river landscape, while Parco Naturale combines biotope protection with a varied network of trails.
Cultural History and Places of Remembrance
The Mulino della Meneghina was fully restored and fitted with reconstructed mill mechanisms. It also recreates the working environment of a small traditional mill workshop. There is also a collection of devotional objects relating to the traditional story of the Meneghina, Maria Domenica Lazzeri. The mill thus brings together a depiction of a working environment and devotional objects—an approach to history different from the keepsakes associated with Maria Domenica Lazzeri at the Casa natale.
The Casa natale di M. Domenica Lazzeri preserves keepsakes, items from her room, and gifts associated with Maria Domenica Lazzeri. Books about her and sixteen paintings by Giovanni Mengon, titled “La via Crucis della Meneghina,” are also kept there. Alongside the personal keepsakes is a clearly identified series of paintings; this focus differs from the reconstructed workshop and collection at the Mulino.
The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo also has a clearly defined chronology. After the devastating fire in Capriana in August 1861, the municipality decided to build a new church. Work on the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo began in 1867 and ended in 1869. The fire, the municipal decision, and the construction period form a sequence from the initial cause to the completion of the work.
