Cogolo: Churches, Art and Trails
Accommodation in Cogolo
If you’re looking for a hotel in Cogolo, your travel interests can help you decide: churches and collections, trails for walking or cycling, and cross-country skiing in winter each offer a different focus. The town’s history is reflected in buildings from various centuries; the trails lead through forests, meadows and mountain landscapes.
Churches, Frescoes and Museum
On the edge of town stands the old Chiesa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo. It was built in 1332 and restored after a fire in 1804. Its north wall features a large fresco cycle by Giovanni Angelo Valorsa of Grosio, dating from 1643. The details of its construction, restoration and frescoes give this site a clear historical connection.
The Chiesetta di San Bartolomeo stands alone in meadows beside the road from Cogolo to the Valle della Mare. Three fresco panels remain on its apse wall, including a monumental depiction of San Cristoforo. In 2022, the chapel was declared a FAI-Luogo del Cuore. The Camminata tra i masi also begins at this chapel in Pegaia, near Cogolo di Peio; the artistic landmark and walking route share a starting point here.
The Chiesa Nuova Maria Madre della Chiesa offers a different architectural impression. It was built between 1970 and 1974 and consecrated in 1974. Its structural supports are made of reinforced concrete, and its exposed blocks are granite. Inside are sculptures by local artists Renato Perini and Luciano Carnessali.
A publicly accessible museum is housed in Palazzo Migazzi. It has been regularly open to visitors since 12 July 2025. On the first floor, a permanent exhibition is dedicated to Cardinal Migazzi; exhibitions on the second floor change. If a particular exhibition is important to your plans, check in advance what is currently on display.
Industrial History and Historic Infrastructure
The Centrale Idroelettrica di Cogolo is considered a remarkable example of 1920s industrial architecture. Its large rooms are decorated using the historic graffito technique. Built in 1917, the cableway system to Punta Linke ran from Cogolo to the western summit of Vioz, Punta Linke, at an elevation of 3,629 metres.
In the wider area around Cogolo, Punta Linke offers a summer visitor route through historic installations preserved by the ice. Punta Linke is also a First World War memorial. If you’re considering this route, check the relevant conditions before your visit.
Exploring on Foot and by Bike
The Camminata tra i masi passes through forests, pastures and mown meadows, and by characteristic mountain farmsteads. For an easy walk through the forest, consider the hike from Cogolo di Peio to the Chiesetta di Santa Lucia; the trail also offers an impressive viewpoint over the valley. The two descriptions highlight different aspects: one follows a succession of farmsteads and open landscapes, while the other is a forest walk with views of the valley.
The Sentiero Botanico follows the old road that connected Cogolo with Peio. The route thus makes a historic link between the two towns part of the walk. For cyclists, the Pista Ciclabile Val di Sole starts in Cogolo and runs for 35 kilometres along the Torrente Noce. The walking trails and cycling route differ not only in how you travel, but also in their character as described: forests, meadows and farmsteads define the Camminata tra i masi, while the cycling route follows the river.
Cross-Country Skiing, Park and Local Traditions
The Centro Fondo di Cogolo has five cross-country ski loops, with a total of 15 kilometres of groomed trails. The centre is currently closed for the season; bear this in mind when planning your visit. For a different perspective on the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio, the Centro Visitatori Pejo offers a small museum and information centre. Installations, multimedia, time-lapse footage, sounds and scents bring the park to life.
Local events also offer a glimpse into tradition. The Fera de Cogol is a livestock exhibition in the town centre; it includes a procession of cows through the streets of Cogolo, symbolising their return from the mountain pastures. At the Palio delle Frazioni, local communities compete in traditional contests. Events include tasks such as mowing hay and felling trees.
