Lagolo by the Alpine Karst Lake
Accommodation in Lagolo
Lago di Lagolo is an Alpine karst lake. There is a reed bed along the shore; hiking trails and the history of the malga add to the picture of Lagolo.
Lake, shore and activities
Lago di Lagolo lies at an elevation of about 950 m. Its elliptical basin measures about 250 Ă— 140 m, and its maximum depth is 7 m. Elevation, shape and depth describe different features of the lake. A reed wetland lies along the shore, helping to purify the water and retain sediment. The reed bed therefore serves a function both for the water and for wildlife.
Spiaggia di Lagolo is a free-to-use, unequipped beach. Bar Bufo on Lago di Lagolo offers stand-up paddleboard (SUP) rentals. If you plan to take part in this activity, check availability directly with Bar Bufo in advance.
Compare hiking trails
The 1.5 km circular trail around Lago di Lagolo is flat and easy, and is suitable for families with children and strollers. The more challenging Senter de le Mule hiking trail has 183 m of elevation gain, takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes, and is not suitable for strollers. The comparison is therefore between a flat, easy circular trail and a more challenging hike with stated elevation gain and approximate duration.
Trail conditions can change seasonally; check current conditions before setting out. Sentiero 618 leads from Piana delle Viote to Lago di Lagolo. The VIOTE–LAGOLO route passes Caverna and Sorgente Stengiador.
Church and the history of the malga
The church of Lagolo was converted from the stable of an abandoned malga and dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. It was blessed in 1970. A striking exposed wooden roof structure defines the interior of the church. The stable’s conversion and the dedication link the building’s history with the malga’s former use. The term roof structure refers to the supporting framework beneath the roof covering that determines the shape of the roof.
The Casara of Malga di Lagolo, also called Ex Malga Lagolo, was built in 1905. Historically, seasonal transhumance of livestock at Malga di Lagolo took place from early June to the end of September. The history of the malga thus brings together a dated building and a seasonal cycle of livestock farming.
Fishing at the lake
Fishing at Lago di Lagolo is permitted with a license from May to October, every day except Thursdays. As regulations may change, check the current rules before fishing.
